It’s a sad day for Derrick Groves, the last of 10 inmates who escaped from a New Orleans jail in May. But it’s already looking to be a hilarious day for those Black people who’d been keeping up with his run from the law. Don’t worry, we’ll explain!

As we told you earlier this year, the chaos first began when 10 men broke out of Orleans Parish Justice Center on May 16. Not too long after that, an investigation into the successful escape plan began which resulted in several jail employees being arrested. Before the month was over, at least eight men had already been apprehended, leaving Derrick Groves and Antoine Massey as the final escapees.
At the end of June, however, Massey wold finally be back in police custody which meant that Groves was the lonely only.
Fast forward to the top of October, and Groves’ days of freedom finally came to an end. Per New Orleans’ local 4WWL TV station, Groves was back in handcuffs after a standoff with police in Atlanta on Wednesday. A Crimestoppers tip allegedly alerted authorities that he may have been inside a home and the residence was consequently gassed several time, according to the U.S. Marshals Service. Groves was found “in a crawl space” before he reportedly moved to the basement and eventually surrendered once police brought out their canines.
While Groves has yet to make an official statement, viral footage of him has already been put out. In one clip, you can see several officers taking him out of the house. In another, you can see him calmly talking to local authorities with his hands behind his back before he spots the camera and shockingly blows it a kiss.
Naturally, once the footage of his arrest began to make the rounds on the social media streets, the reactions from folks were far from what you’d expect. While there were few who were happy that he was finally off the streets and headed back to jail–there were a whole lot more who felt let down as if their favorite team had lost.
If you find that incredulous–don’t. We previously told you that this story of escapees caused countless people on the internet to place bets for who will be the last inmate to be apprehended, so the unserious response to Groves’ arrest is really par for the course.
“Derrick Groves had a legendary run fr, damn I thought he made it out of the country but his ass was chillin in the A whole time eating American Deli,” one user joked on X/Twitter.
“We were rooting for you Derrick Groves. What the hell were you doing in Atlanta,” said another.
“Man was supposed to be in Cuba, not no doggone Atlanta,” one other user wrote.
Added another: “They done caught Derrick Groves slipping. That boy was free as hell.”
One user decided to cut Groves some slack, writing: “People saying why didn’t Derrick groves leave the country watch too many damn movies lol shit wasn’t that simple for him.”
Yet and still, some people couldn’t get over the fact that after all this time, he only made it to Atlanta. As one user said, “I thought Derrick Groves was hiding out in the mountains down in Guatemala, herding cattle but that nigga was in Atlanta eating wings at Magic City.”
Over on TikTok, similar sentiments were expressed.
“He was supposed to be OUT OF THE COUNTRY, WHY would he stay here?!!?” said one user.
“Bruh went to the snitch capitol,” one other user said.
Added another: “Damn. They got him?! It was a good lil run.”
