In an August 28 post on X, Flex announced that he will be hitting the tables at 7pm ET for the last time on September 1 for a special Labor Day show on Hot 97.

“THIS MONDAY LABOR DAY SEPTEMBER 1ST WITH BE MY LAST SHOW ON HOT97 AT 7PM,” he wrote. “ALL THINGS COME TO AN END! END OF AN ERA THAT I ENJOYED VERY MUCH! I SUPER ENJOYED IT ALL! I WILL MAKE THE LAST SHOW A GREAT ONE! APPRECIATE EVERYONE WHO HAS SUPPORTED ME OVER THE YEARS!”

Can’t you hear him screaming through your screen right now?

Flex’s post received over four million views and thousands of comments from fans who aren’t quite ready for the end of an era.

“Thank you for breaking some of my records,” wrote Missy Elliot on X.

“WE NEED YOU TO RUN IT BACK FOR THE LAST TIME,” wrote YungDagger on X.

Since he started spinning on Hot 97 back in 1992, Funkmaster Flex made a name for himself with his booming voice and his seemingly endless bomb drops throughout his sets. Over the years he’s created some legendary hip-hop moments, including epic freestyles from artists like Kendrick Lamar, Young Ma and The Roots’ Black Thought.

And who could forget his 23- minute premiere of the Jay-Z Kanye West collab “Otis” on July 20, 2011 when he told listeners to put their hands in the cash register at their local convenience store for no reason?

The well wishes came in on Black TikTok too. Bandana Blake paid tribute to Flex in an August 28 post, calling him a staple of New York City radio, and had a few ideas for how he could make his last show one to remember.

“All those legendary freestyles that we loved and we had on mix tapes and that we used to listen to and learn every bar for bar, bring every one of those artists back and let them freestyle one last time because the culture is never gonna have another Funkmaster Flex,” he said.

But he also used the moment to express a hilarious beef he’s had with Flex for dropping his famous bombs on some of his favorite songs over the years.

“Flex was infamous for dropping hella bombs, rewinding the song, messing up your whole mix. You sitting there next to the radio all day for them to play your favorite new song, and he’s dropping bomb after bomb on it, talking nonstop,” he added. “Yo Flex, you know how many tapes you ruined doing that?”
