Former First Lady Michelle Obama uttered her famous phrase “when they go low, we go high” for the first time during the 2016 Democratic National Convention. But eight years and a Donald Trump presidency later, it’s clear the new plan for Democrats is to meet Trump exactly where he’s at: the lowest of the low.
This year’s Democratic National Convention (DNC) has been nothing short of exciting from celebrity appearances to the high energy voting roll call. But what The Root argues might be the most entertaining parts of each night are the speakers not holding back from calling out the GOP nominee any chance they get. Let’s revisit the best clapbacks to Trump heading into the final night of the DNC.
Michelle Obama on “Black Jobs”
After calling Trump out for his “limited view” of the world, Obama raised an important point. She said “I want to know who’s going to tell him that the job he’s currently seeking might just be one of those ‘Black jobs.’”
Barack Obama on Trump’s “Weird Obsession With Crowd Sizes”
We’re glad somebody said it! Former President Barack Obama took to the stage to speak about Trump’s ongoing “problems” since “he rode down his golden escalator.” Obama clearly hasn’t lost his sense of humor as he perfectly replicated Trump’s hand gestures in front of the roaring crowd.
Jasmine Crockett Comparing Trump’s and Harris’ Resumes
There’s no way you thought America’s most fiesty representative was going to miss out on the perfect opportunity to properly read Trump for filth.
At the beginning of her almost ten-minute speech, Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett told the audience “Let’s compare their [Trump and Harris] resumes. Shall we?” To put it simply, Crockett let it rip with a detailed list of comparisons between the two candidates.
Tim Walz on Turning the Page on Trump
As he accepted the Democratic nomination for vice president, Minn. Gov. Tim Walz called out the former president and his running mate several times. Walz spoke about his time as a history teacher, and he even said “those teenagers could teach Donald Trump a hell of a lot about what a leader is.”
Oprah Winfrey Jabs at Trump AND JD Vance
Without even mentioning names, Oprah Winfrey made it known that “We are beyond ridiculous tweets and lies and foolery,” she said. Obviously, Oprah had Trump in mind here, but she also made sure to mention JD Vance’s “childless cat lady” comment hitting two birds with one stone.
Pete Buttigieg Tells Americans Not To Forget
Trump and Vance were catching it from all angles at the DNC. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg took to the stage to tell the audience not to forget all the damage Trump has done and all the lies and falsehoods Trump has told.
Raphael Warnock Tells Trump to Read the Bible For Real
In true pastor fashion, Ga. Sen. Raphael Warnock took the DNC straight to church with his speech on night one. Warnock couldn’t miss the opportunity to call Trump a hypocrite, saying what the former president should really do with the Bible is “try reading it.”
Steve Kerr Wants Trump to Go “Night, Night”
Only on the 2024 DNC stage would you ever see professional basketball coach Steve Kerr tell Trump “night, night” as a nod to “the great Steph Curry.” And the sleeping hands gesture just added 10,000 more comedic cool points to the jab.
Hakeem Jeffries Said “Trump is Like An Old Boyfriend”
Speaker of the House Hakeem Jeffries created the perfect analogy that really got the DNC crowd talking. During his speech, Jeffries compared Trump to an “old boyfriend who you broke up with, but he just won’t go away.” He continued telling Trump “Bro, we broke up with you for a reason.”
AOC Calls Trump a “Two-Bit Union Buster”
In one of the best speeches so far at the DNC, N.Y. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called Trump everything but an angel. Buckling down, AOC said she’s tired of “a two-bit union buster” saying he’s more patriotic than Vice President Kamala Harris.
Now try to say that five times fast.
Malcolm Kenyatta Says “Usually, Republicans want to Ban Books”
Pa. Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta was just one of the many speakers talking about the infamous Project 2025. Kenyatta said he found it “interesting” that Republicans “are trying to shove this down our throats” when “usually, republicans want to ban books.”
John Giles Says “We All Need an Adult in the White House”
Mesa, Ariz. Mayor John Giles unexpectedly took the stage at the DNC to express his support for Harris. Even though he is a Republican, Giles said his party has been “kidnapped” and forced into the “cult of Donald Trump.”
Hilary Clinton’s “Lock Him Up” Chant Makes a Grand Comeback
Remember when Hilary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign was filled with slogans like “I’m with her” and “stronger together?” Well, one of the most iconic chants made it’s comeback at the DNC when Clinton said Trump made history as the first person to run with 34 convictions. “Lock him up” chants from the crowd quickly filled the room, and Clinton could do nothing but stand there smiling.
Bill Clinton Is “STILL Younger Than Donald Trump”
Many were surprised to see former President Bill Clinton take the stage, but the 78-year-old proved he still has life in him as he repeatedly jabbed at Trump. Clinton made it known that he’s “still younger than Trump” despite being elected president over 30 years ago. If that wasn’t enough, Clinton said he was speechless over Trump “obsession with Hannibal Lector.”
JB Pritzker Flat Out Called Trump Stupid
Ill. Gov JB Pritzker didn’t mince words while referring to the former president. During his speech, he said “Trump is only rich in one thing: stupidity.”
Law and Order Comes To Life
In one of the best presidential ads running this week, the DNC clapped back at the former president in one way no one saw coming. Who else do you know would use the iconic “Law and Order” intro scene to call Trump a criminal? We’ll wait….
