On the outside, the house on Crown Ridge Court in a Houston neighborhood looked like any other upscale Texas property. But behind one locked door, police say a nightmare was unfolding. For five years, police say James Earl Johnson kept his disabled wife captive in a bedroom…until a split-second mistake changed everything.

Ruby Johnson, 46, was allegedly kept isolated in a bedroom of her $1 million Clear Lake home since 2021, according to a probable cause order obtained by the Independent. Ruby was allegedly held captive under lock and key with “extremely limited contact with the outside world,” ABC 13 Houston reported.
Johnson allegedly forced his wife to survive on a single egg a day and an occasional light dinner, all while allegedly denying her the medical care required for her disability according to court documents. While authorities have not disclosed the specific nature of her disability, court documents state her alleged confinement left her with significant “physical and mental impairment,” leaving her dependent on Johnson for basic care.
Her alleged five-year captivity reached its final chapter because of a single oversight: a forgotten phone.
When Johnson accidentally left a cellphone on a nightstand on Friday (March 6), Ruby used it to call 911, according to court documents. But that desperate call for help was cut short.
When Johnson found his wife with the phone, he allegedly slapped her, carried her back to bed and disconnected her call with the 911 dispatcher. Johnson was arrested the same day and charged with injury to a disabled individual and abandoning or endangering a child, elderly individual or disabled individual, Harris County criminal court records revealed.
However, her 911 call that ultimately led to her rescue wasn’t her first attempt. On Nov. 16, 2025, police were called to the home, but upon their arrival, Ruby claimed she and her children were instructed to not speak with them and to keep quiet. Officers left without filing a report.
An even more disturbing twist is that the couple’s adult children also lived in the same five-bedroom house during the alleged abuse. It’s unclear whether the victim’s adult son— who told ABC 13 his mother was in the hospital on Monday but didn’t elaborate on her condition— knew his mom was allegedly held against her will. Neighbors were reportedly unaware Ruby was being held captive inside the 6,783 square foot mansion, according to the Daily Mail.
Johnson was later released on a $100,000 bond and ordered to stay away from their home, FOX 26 Houston reported. Per reports, he will be staying with a nephew in the interim until his next court date on March 18.
If convicted, Johnson faces up to 20 years in prison.
