From record-breaking, chart-topping musicians, to genre-defying actors, to reinventing a Disney Princess, there is no aspect of entertainment that Black artists didn’t dominate. The undeniable impact and influence of their artistry gave us joy during turbulent times. In recognition of their game-changing talent, these are the 2023 Entertainers of the Year.

Of course we’re starting with Beyoncé. She kicked off 2023 by breaking the record for the most Grammy wins with 32. Then she took her game-changing “Renaissance” tour around the world, literally changing the landscape of every city she stopped in. Then, she wrapped up the year by releasing a concert film of her ridiculously popular tour, which was another hit for her. The was officially Queen Bey’s year.

SZA

SZA shocked the music world with the success of her hit album “SOS.” The record showcased her growth as an artist, as well as her confidence and fresh sound. “SOS’” impact on music brought SZA nine Grammy nominations, signaling that she’s ready to continue the party into 2024.

Halle Bailey

As she dealt with the endless negativity from trolls who couldn’t wrap their heads around a Black mermaid, Halle Bailey was the definition of class and grace. Her performance delivered an inspirational new role model for Black kids, showing them that they belong in any world, real or fantasy. She is the No. 1 breakout star of 2023.

Drake

In a year where a lot of experts questioned the state of current hip-hop, Drake once again stood atop the pack as the genre’s biggest selling artist. Add in his buzzy, successful world tour and it’s clear that his popularity is just as huge as it’s ever been.

Jeffrey Wright

Jeffrey Wright is receiving serious Oscar buzz for the extraordinary “American Fiction.” Add in memorable appearances in “Asteroid City” and “Rustin,” as well as his return as Marvel’s Watcher in “What If…?” Season 2, and we are officially in the Jeffrey Wright world domination era.

Quinta Brunson

“Abbott Elementary” continues to be one of the funniest, most critically-acclaimed shows on TV. Just when we think we know what to expect from Quinta, she gives us Taraji P. Henson and Sheryl Lee Ralph put on an acting masterclass. Plus, she was an outspoken leader during the WGA strike. She’s a bonafide role model and she’s hilarious.

Dominique Fishback

Dominique Fishback’s tour de force performane in “Swarm” is still living rent free in our heads. She delivered every single emotion possible over the course of the series. And did it all effortlessly and brilliantly. As if that wasn’t enough, she helped evolve the “Transformers” franchise, making it feel like more than just one long special effects sequence. We can’t wait to see what she has in store for 2024.

Usher

With his Las Vegas residency, Usher had the most talked about concert of the year. Seriously, something wild happened almost every night. It was the hottest ticket of the year. Plus, he’s set to steal even more hearts with his Super Bowl Halftime Show, which is absolutely the only reason some people will be watching.

Victoria Monét

If you aren’t listening to Victoria Monét on a regular basis, you aren’t living your life right. “On My Mama” made this her breakout year, but we know she’s not an overnight success. It’s just exciting to see her nominated for Grammys and finally get all the respect she deserves. That “On My Mama” Grammys performance is going to be epic.

Michael B. Jordan

Michael B. Jordan officially completed his transition from actor to filmmaker. He starred in an directed “Creed III,” which received rave reviews. After its success, he teased that he wants to expand the franchise into TV, telling more stories. He’s already in talks to lead “Creed 4″ and is set to star in the “I Am Legend” sequel. It will be interesting to see what other genres he branches out into.

Issa Rae

From “Barbie,” to “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” to “Rap Sh!t,” to “American Fiction,” this has been the year of Issa. What makes it so amazing is that all those projects present a wide spectrum of genres. She’s letting the world know she can do literally anything.

Jon Batiste

Jon Batiste is a singular, special talent. He received six Grammy nominations for his album “World Music Radio,” let fans in on his family’s emotional battle with cancer in “American Symphony” and wowed audiences at The Root 100. He’s the kind of artist who can easily be on this list every year. He’s that good.

Teyana Taylor

Teyana Taylor is a creative director, dancer, choreographer and actress. She’s in the midst of awards buzz for her exceptional performance in “A Thousand and One.” This is a career year for Taylor. Hopefully, 2024 brings her the next level jump she deserves.

Colman Domingo

There’s something about Colman Domingo that draws you in. He has the kind of fascinating presence that you can’t look away from. His star power is on full display as civil rights leader Bayard Rustin in the Netflix biopic, as well as in the complex role of Mister in “The Color Purple.” He needs to be a superstar pronto. It’s what the audience deserves.

Ayo Edebiri

Photo: FX Photo: FX

Jeremy Allen White’s Carmy may be the star of “The Bear,” but it’s Ayo Edebiri’s Sydney who’s the heart and soul of the Hulu series. If you saw her in the raunchy teen comedy “Bottoms,” you know it’s only a matter of time before she inevitably becomes a big star and exits for a leading role in a major film franchise. Yes, I’m campaigning for Edebiri to join the MCU.
