A Texas Tech University police officer was shot and killed Monday night at campus police headquarters, causing the Lubbock, Texas, campus to be placed on lockdown for more than an hour.

NBC News reports that the incident started after officers responded to a call for a student “welfare check.” When the officers got to the student’s dorm room, they found drugs and drug paraphernalia, which prompted them to take the student to campus police headquarters, authorities said.
A spokesman for the school said in a statement: “During this time, the suspect pulled a gun and shot an officer in the head. The officer is deceased.”
After shooting the officer, the suspect fled on foot, officials said. A manhunt began, and those on campus were instructed to “shelter in place” as police searched for the suspect.
The suspect, who has been identified as 19-year-old Hollis A. Daniels, was tackled by a campus police officer around 9:30 p.m. CDT near the Jones AT&T stadium.
