It appears Snoop Dogg has had a change of heart when it comes to his thoughts on LGBTQIA+ representation in TV, movies and music. But if you have a hard time believing that statement, maybe seeing the recent move he pulled will be enough to convince you.

As we told you in August, the “Sensual Seduction” rapper drew ire from more than a handful of folks online thanks to comments many viewed as “homophobic.” Specifically, during an interview he gave on the” It’s Giving” podcast, Snoop recalled a time where he was watching the animated movie “Lightyear” with his grandson and had to explain to him how the female lead on the film was able to parent her child with another woman. (The character was a Black woman named Alisha Hawthorne who had a wife named Kiko and the two raised a son together.)
At time, Snoop initially said that in the moment, he just hushed his grandchild and tried to move on because he didn’t have the words to explain. But then he later expressed that he didn’t “come here for this sh*t” and shared his frustration over the fact that he was made to address the LGBTQ couple with his grandchild at his young age.
“So it’s like, f*ck me, I’m scared to go to the movies now,” Snoop explained. “Like, y’all throwing me in the middle of sh*t that I don’t have an answer for. It threw me for a loop. We have to show that at this age? Like, they’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.”
Now, however, it looks like he’s realized the error of his ways (or got sick and tired of the backlash) and recently decided to do something about it. That “something” came in the form of a new song he released on Thursday, titled “Love Is Love” that dropped on is animated YouTube channel for children “Doggyland.” The hope is that song will help teach kids more about inclusion and diversity. But that’s not all!
The “Drop It Like It’s Hot” rapper also teamed up with GLAAD–the world’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization– for Spirit Day. That day (Oct. 16) is set aside for thousands of celebrities, organizations, news & media outlets, tv & film studio and more to go purple and support LGBTQ youth by creating clear possibility models for them to thrive and be represented in the world.
Speaking in an interview on his official YouTube about his involvement with GLAAD and why he chose to be a part of this year’s efforts, Snoop explained: “At the end of the day, it’s all about love. That’s what we’re teachin’ the kids with ‘Love Is Love.’ Partnering with GLAAD for Spirit Day just felt right, because spreading love and respect for everybody is what real gangstas do. We’re showin’ the next generation that kindness is cool, inclusion is powerful, and love always wins.”
Snoop later went on to share how important it is for him to support LGBTQ families and the many different kinds of families that exist today. He called it a “beautiful thing” for kids to have parents of all kinds and for them to be shown and taught what real love looks like.
“Being able to have parents from all walks of life, whether it be two fathers, two mothers, whatever it is, love is the key,” Snoop said in part.
