It has been two years since “All The Queens Men” actor Skyh Black, 37, and “Sistas” actress KJ Smith, 40, had their extravagant wedding party in September of 2023. Who can forget Skyh slowly walking down a hill in an all-white suit tied together with a dramatic belt that flowed in the breeze, while the bride, KJ Smith, wore a dress with a sheer corset and a gorgeous, dramatic train that followed behind her. Yet, that was only the start to the passionate couple’s theatre-like production wedding party with more dramatic ceremonial entrances, dance numbers, and a star-studded guest list.

Wanting to share the love and excitement, the newlyweds posted multiple clips from their wedding party on social media, but the comments they received were anything but love, as the newlyweds were clowned by the Black internet for their “Tyler Perry Production” wedding. Some folks claimed that Black wanted to be the bride and that teased the couple were fighting over the wedding spotlight.
“How cute. They both wore their wedding day heels,” one user commented of the couple dancing to Jay-Z and Kanye West’s song “Lift Off.”
“The way they both want the spotlight has me dying,” wrote another.
Now, the actor has opened up about the criticism that he and his wife received for their wedding party in an emotional conversation with 20-time Grammy Award-winning Gospel icon Kirk Franklin on his podcast “Den Of Kings.”
On the podcast, which also featured celebrity guests R&B singer and actor Tyrese Gibson and record producer and songwriter DJ Montay, Black was asked by Gospel giant Kirk Franklin if he’s ever had regrets about showing so much of his relationship. After taking a moment to pause, Black responded that he had regrets because of the response he received from the online community.
Choking up as he spoke, Black said “The response from people made both of us feel displaced. It hurt. I’m not going to sit up here and say it didn’t. It hurt, and to me, I had just finished valet and parking cars, only five years ago at the West Hollywood edition. I was homeless the year before… ” He explained the couple had just started making money. “I waited, and I deserved this moment, and people on social media made us feel like we didn’t deserve it.”
Before turning to acting, Black had previously worked as a backup dancer for musical icons such as Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, and Rihanna. However, even with this career background, the actor allowed himself to be vulnerable as her shared around the podcast table how rough the start of his career had been before he got his big break in the entertainment industry as a regular character on Tyler Perry’s BET series “Sistas.”
“It took me 17 years to be happy, and I met the love of my f****** life… And now you’re concerned about your image, and people have all this s*** to say about your wedding. And I was like, damn, I just wanted… I did my wedding my way. I just wanted to have a good time.”
Though the couple may have had to deal with social media and its trolling antics, they are moving forward in their lives as they are expecting their first child together, with KJ Smith rocking her baby bump on social media and the pair being just as openly loved up dancing together as did on their wedding day. Black also made sure to express that KJ Smith is his rock in the entertainment world, and as a couple, they are determined to show up and chase their ambitions to gain the respect they feel they deserve within the entertainment industry.
“My wife and I had to get our names known… we got a goal for our careers.”
