Police said a woman, identified as Romeca Meeks on social media, was involved in a physical altercation with another woman shortly after she dropped her son off at school in the Windy City’s South Loop neighborhood around 9 a.m. Monday (Sept. 8), WGN reported.
According to reports, witnesses claimed Meeks was ambushed during a heated moment between her son’s father and his girlfriend. The second woman, according to police, took out a gun and shot Meeks in the face. Eyewitnesses claimed the gun was fired at extremely close range. Meeks was taken to Stroger Hospital where she died.
The woman accused of firing the gun, whose name has not been released by authorities, was taken into custody at the scene. She has not been charged as of this writing. The shooting does appear to be domestic-related, police added, and that the incident was connected to a personal dispute.
Videos of the aftermath went viral online, including a woman saying how she’s “licensed to carry.” Witnesses in a video posted on Facebook are heard yelling that a man had Meeks in a headlock before the other woman shot her. One woman is heard demanding that the police arrest the woman, claiming that she saw her shoot Meeks and place the gun in her car.
Additionally, Meeks’ handwritten note, placed in her son’s lunchbox on the morning before the shooting, was posted on her social media and went viral. In the note, Meeks called Monday a “fresh start.” The note continued, “You can start off strong. Always remain yourself. You’re the coolest, smartest, and funniest kid I know. I love you so much and you make me so proud. Have a great day. Mommy loves you!!! Love, Mommy.”
A close friend of Meeks, who says the victim was in school working to become a nurse, said she was a devoted mother who was always there for her son, WGN reported.
