Richardson was arrested and charged with fourth-degree domestic violence assault against her boyfriend, Christian Coleman.

According to reports, the athlete was with Coleman, a fellow sprinter, at the Seattle–Tacoma International Airport in Seattle on Sunday, July 27. While they left TSA airport security, the two got into a fight, per The New York Times.

The arresting officer reportedly “witnessed Richardson shove Coleman multiple times as Coleman walked away from Richardson.” Per USA Today, Coleman allegedly “fell into a nearby column,” and Richardson, “threw a pair of headphones” at him. This, along with footage caught on security camera, led to the officer deeming it “enough probable cause to arrest Richardson.”

The charge itself is listed as “a fourth-degree domestic violence assault.”

Richardson was placed in custody on Sunday for about 19 hours at the SCORE South Correctional Entity and was released on Monday. The report also details that Coleman “refused to press charges” and “declined to be a victim,” and that the case has been cleared. Coleman and Richardson have reportedly been dating for two years, but only went public with their relationship this past February.

In a statement to PEOPLE, USA Track and Field (USATF) said, “USATF is aware of the reports. We do not have a comment on this matter.”

Both Richardson and Coleman had raced in the preliminary rounds of the USATF Outdoor Championships on Thursday, July 31. As the Times reports, Richardson was in good spirits after racing on Thursday and earning her best time. She told the media, “Right now, I’m cruising under the radar, but when it’s time to hit — it’s gonna be a bang where y’all see my name.”

As we have reported, Richardson is one of the most prominent track and field stars in the world right now. She’s known for her record-breaking speed and has served as an inspiration to millions of fans. At the 2024 Paris Olympic Games last summer, Richardson earned the silver medal in the 100-meter dash, running 10.87 seconds.
