Kids across the country are getting ready for the start of a new school year, and parents are more than happy to take their homes back (oops, did we say that out loud?). Anyway, the first day of school is a huge photo op for families who want to capture the moment of their little ones dressed in their best and ready to learn.

But while the students are dripping in perfectly pressed new school attire, some online have noticed that parents are showing up in outfit choices that should come with a warning label and are asking them to cover up.
If you’re getting ready for your little ones’ first day of school, here’s what the internet says you absolutely should not wear.
Say Bye-Bye to the Bonnets
Although going to sleep with a good satin bonnet can make the difference between a good and a bad hair day the next morning, some on TikTok say bonnets are better left in bed.
“Unless the rules have changed since I’ve been in school, no headgear is allowed outside of religious headgear,” said TikTok user FenamTerra.
In her post, she points out a parent dress code sign put in place by the Dougherty County School District for its pre-K parents strictly prohibiting sleepwear and bonnets. This rule had the internet divided, with some parents arguing that they should be allowed to wear what’s comfortable.
“School is not a professional setting if you don’t work there especially if you’re just picking up your children,” wrote one person in the comments.
Others believed there’s nothing wrong with asking folks to get dressed before leaving home.
“A school dress code for parents being “please get dressed“ and yall mad? I can’t😭😭,” wrote another commenter.
What’s Inside Your Top Should Be a Secret
FenamTerra points out that this school’s dress code sign also mentions that parent’s tops should “fully cover the chest.” Although you might think it’s perfectly reasonable to try to prevent nip slips in a pre-K classroom, apparently some of the parents need it in writing.
Commenters agreed that parents’ tops should be as demure as possible, and boobs should be kept in bras.
“I went to my child’s elementary open house. I thought I was either in a strip club or it was a pajama party. Adults need to do better,” wrote someone in the comments.
Cover Your Ass (CYA)
TikToker Kay Michelle believes there is a time and a place for everything, and while she’s willing to give parents a pass on the bonnets, she says school drop-off is no place for booty shorts – she says save those for the club instead.
“For the ladies that got kids, I got a real quick question for y’all, ‘When y’all get up in the morning time, what in y’all damn mind tells y’all to just put on some little ass booty shorts to go drop ya’ll kids off?’” she said in a post. “When I drop my kids off at school, all I see is ass.”
Lots of people in the comments agreed with her.
“It’s always been odd to me. There’s certain things I wouldn’t even wear around my own children, let alone a place that is actually for children…like school,” wrote someone.
Although most online agreed that the dress code is much more forgiving for parents who are just waiting in the car line, an overwhelming consensus said parents should be more mindful if they plan to come into the school building with their kids, like TikTok user Aria, who said if you’re getting out of the car, you should always be camera ready.
“Just assume that on the first day of school that your school could be the school that there’s gonna be news crews at,” she said in a post. “Please, brush your hair, take off the bonnet, put on an outfit with a bra, that’s all.”
One commenter, who agreed, had the perfect low-maintenance solution for the drop-off dress code.
“Honestly this is why I invested in good athlesuire wear. Nothing see through, fast, and easy,” wrote someone on TikTok.
