Scary New Update in Kamala Harris’ Personal Security Drama in Los Angeles

The union representing Los Angeles Police Department officers has a controversial take on protecting the former vice president

Last week, we told you that former Vice President Kamala Harris was being protected by Los Angeles law enforcement after President Donald Trump revoked a Secret Service protection extension granted to her by former President Joe Biden before he left office.

But not everyone was on board with the move to ask L.A. cops to look after VP Harris, and now, just one week later, it looks she will need to find another way to keep herself safe.

In January, former President Joe Biden signed an order granting an extension through July 2026 to the standard six months of Secret Service protection VP Harris is entitled to. Although it’s unclear what was behind the move, President Trump used his executive power to order an end to that protection as of Sept. 1.

Fearing Trump’s move would put her in danger, political leaders from Harris’s home state, including L.A. Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom, called on local law enforcement, including members of the California Highway Patrol and special units from the LAPD Metropolitan Division, to fill in the gaps.

But the police protection didn’t last long. The Los Angeles Times reported that Mayor Bass’s decision got plenty of pushback from the Los Angeles Police Protective League, the union representing the city’s police officers, who felt that officers shouldn’t be called away from stopping crime to protect a private citizen. According to ABC 7 Eyewitness News, the LAPD pulled its officers from protecting Harris on September 6.

“Pulling police officers from protecting everyday Angelenos to protect a failed presidential candidate who also happens to be a multi-millionaire with multiple homes and who can easily afford to pay for her own security is nuts,” the union said in a statement.“The mayor should tell Governor Newsom that if he wants to curry favor with Ms. Harris and her donor base, then he should open up his own wallet because LA taxpayers should not be footing the bill for this ridiculousness.”

The union’s statement comes as Harris’s security has become more important than ever as she prepares for high-profile public appearances to promote her new memoir, “107 Days,” which is set to go on sale Sept. 23.
