Rep. Ilhan Omar Claps Back at Trump’s Nasty Comments About Her Native Country

The latest chapter in the long, bitter feud between President Trump and Rep. Ilhan Omar has officially reached a new low.

If you thought President Donald Trump was going to get away with making nasty comments about a congresswoman and her native country — think again! Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar clapped back at Trump for using xenophobic language to insult her native country of Somalia.

The president spoke with Fox News hurling insults at several of his critics during a recent Fox News interview. On the list was Omar, who has a well-documented history of getting on Trump’s nerves. He’s repeatedly told her to leave the country and stop “tell[ing] us how to run our country,” but his latest remarks reached a new low.

“I look at somebody that comes from Somalia, who, where they don’t have anything — they don’t have police, they don’t have military, they don’t have anything,” Trump told Fox News. “All they have is crime — and she comes in and tells us how to run our country.”

He continued, mocking the Democrat. “‘The Constitution says this, the Constitution says…’ The whole thing is crazy,” Trump said. This wasn’t the first time Trump has attacked Omar’s heritage. In fact, he told reporters in September that Somalia didn’t want her back.

“You know, I met the head of Somalia, did you know that?” Trump said. “And I suggested that maybe he’d like to take her back. He said, ‘I don’t want her.’” Omar denied these claims. Fast forward to this month and the years-long feud between the two leaders is still alive and well.

Trump’s stereotypical view of the East African nation is a misrepresentation. The country has an active police force and army with a growing economy. Omar’s family fled Somalia during the Somalian Civil War in 1991, according to her Congress bio. They were eventually granted asylum and moved to Virginia in 1995. Omar became a U.S. citizen in 2000 before becoming the first Africa-born refugee to serve in Congress in 2019.

The Congresswoman responded to the president’s Fox News interview on X with a simple yet effective read. “Unlike you, I can read and that’s why I know what the Constitution says,” she wrote.

Trump has faced much backlash given his sometimes questionable application of the Constitution. In an interview, the president famously responded “I don’t know,” when asked if he had to uphold the Constitution. He’s also been sued by multiple states citing violations of the Constitution. The Trump administration has continuously denied any wrongdoing in accordance with the law.
