The Days of ‘They Go Low, We Go High’ Are Over For The Democratic Party. Good Riddance. Some Democrats have decided to take the gloves off when it comes to combating President Donald Trumps shenanigans, and it’s about damn time. But first we need some context to understand how.

President Trump has a bit of a problem. During the midterms of a presidency, the party that is the opposite of the president typically gains seats in Congress. This is particularly true when the President has a not great approval rating.
Right now, the President is dealing with a Republican party that is not very happy with him. Some are frustrated with his Big Beautiful Bill, and even more are giving him the side eye about the Epstein files. So, with all this swirling around him, has his approval rating at 38%. An approval rating that is lower than Drake’s right after ‘Not Like Us’ dropped.
This has the President spooked. He is concerned about losing his slim majority in the House of Representatives, so he called on Texas to create house seats for him in a desperate attempt to keep his party in power after the 2026 midterms.
Texas is an incredibly conservative state led by Greg Abbott, MAGA friendly Governor. So, they were happy to break with the tradition of redistricting only after a census and try to do it now…and Democrats are pissed.
Remember 2016? Hilary Clinton was running against Donald Trump for the Presidency of the United States. Dems were confident she would win, so they decided to turn their noses up at Trump because his campaign was viewed as crass. So in July, Michelle Obama took the stage at the Democratic National Convention and said famously “When they go low, we go high” in response to the Republicans attacks on Hilary and the Democratic party.
Well, we know what happened that year. And despite that defeat, the Democratic Party has continued to be high minded in the face of Trump doing the opposite.
Now, 9 years later, the Dems are finally changing their tune. It’s about damn time.
Texas Democratic representatives left the state under the cover of night so that Republicans could not do the bidding of the President. And while they will eventually have to go back (they are penalized $500 each day they are gone), it gives the National Democratic Party a chance to try to figure out how to push back against what President Trump is doing.
One idea? Do the same thing he is doing, just in reverse.
Gavin Newsome, the Democratic Governor of California, is trying to create more Democratic House seats in his state. This is not a high minded, ‘we go high’ approach. This is, well, a dirty move. But it’s the same kind of dirty move that Trump is fond of making.
It is, to quote Newsome, a ‘fight fire with fire’ approach to what Texas is doing. And while I don’t know if it will work, at least a Democrat is trying to push back against a President who is a habitual line stepper.
