Republicans lost big last night. Trump is “Truthing” up a storm. And Black folks are happy about it.

In governor’s races, Democrats won every race they were in. Mikie Sherril won in New Jersey. (No surprise there.) And Abigail Spanberger won in Virginia. (A bit of a surprise, here. I mean, Virginia was a part of the confederacy.)
Both wins are historic firsts. Spanberger, a former Democratic congresswoman, will become Virginia’s first female governor.
And Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill will become New Jersey’s first female Democratic governor. What’s more, the lieutenant governors voted in are Democrats as well.
But those are just the state-wide races. Trump’s party lost lower-level elections too.
Now, the NYC mayoral race result was not very surprising. Not really. Yeah, the billionaires, Boomers and Trump freaked out at the prospect of Mamdani winning. But the surprise was him beating Cuomo in the Democratic primary back in June. His win yesterday is hardly surprising. (Even though Trump was acting mad vile in the lead up to the election.)
And we need to put some respect on Motown’s name. Detroit made history by electing Mary Sheffield…a Democrat who will also be the city’s first Black woman mayor.
Wanna know what had the collective jaws of Black America on the floor? It wasn’t the races in Virginia and Jersey. It was not the New York City mayoral race. It was something that only the real ones knew to look for: The relatively small race for two seats on the Georgia Public Service Commission.
It was not a sexy race. It did not capture the attention of the nation. But it was worth watching because if we are going to see a real change next election cycle, it will have to come from places like Georgia: red states that had started to show signs of turning blue.
And those races did not disappoint. In fact, they are the shock of the evening.
Democrats flipped boffa ‘dem seats on the Georgia Public Service Commission. Alicia Johnson and Peter Hubbard, who ran for Georgia Public Service commissioner in Districts 2 and 3, respectively, defeated GOP incumbents Tim Echols and Fitz Johnson. This shocked everyone. And Black folks from the Peach State did not hold their tongue.
Listen, this is a great night to be a Democrat. Yes, President Trump is still in office. And yes, we are knee deep in a government shutdown.
But America just voiced their displeasure with Trump in a recent poll. And then they did it at the ballot box. Make no mistake…last night’s election results are in response to what Trump has been up to.
It’s been a dark 2025. Tuesday was the first glimmer of hope.
