Political ‘Karen’ Marjorie Taylor Greene Is Coming For Rep. Ilhan Omar Over Mistranslated Speech

The outspoken GOP congresswoman is calling for the first Somali Congresswoman to be censured over a mistranslated speech about her heritage.

Outspoken GOP congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene once again has her sights set on sabotaging Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) β€” this time over a mistranslated speech.

Last week, a mistranslation of a speech given by the Minnesota Congresswoman began making the rounds, and a conservative social media account claimed that Omar had called herself, β€œSomalian first, Muslim second.”

The misquote was then boosted by Rep. Greene (R-GA), who called Omar a β€œterrorist sympathizer” and a β€œforeign agent in our government.”

However, it quickly became clear that it was all a mistranslation. Somali translators debunked the mistranslations for the Minnesota Reformer and the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

They explained that Omar actually said: β€œWe are people who know that they are Somali and Muslim.”

Rep. Omar also clarified that people from Somalia don’t call themselves Somalian. β€œFYI: Somali people are called Somalis, not β€œSomalians.” If you are gonna talk about us at least try to get our ethnicity right. Thank you!” she tweeted.

Unfortunately for Rep. Omar, the xenophobic social media drama has spilled over into the halls of Congress. Even though multiple Somali translators have corrected the record, Greene is moving forward with a vote to censure Omar and remove her from her remaining committee positions, arguing that her language was treasonous.

Greene also told Axios on Monday that she’s β€œnot rescinding it, not backing off.” The vote could be headed to the floor as early as this week.

However, the political outlet spoke to several GOP members of Congress who said they would either be voting in opposition or were undecided. The censure vote is incredibly unlikely to pick up Democratic support, however the move seems to be characteristic of Greene’s habit of creating chaos and division in the country’s legislative branch.

Rep. Omar, who has been censured previously, appears unfazed. β€œI truly do not care about what that insane woman does,” she told Politico.
