I can’t be the only person to see that the Supreme Court is a mess. Since President Donald Trump appointed three ultra conservative justices to the court, it has not served as a check on executive power like it is supposed to do. They have pretty much rubber stamped everything the president wants to do. Justices have lifetime appointments, so that means we are probably looking at over 10 years of dealing with what Trump has done to the court if something doesn’t change. But political consultant James Carville has a theory that things might change…soon.

Recently, Carville took to social media to explained how he thinks the next president will fix what’s wrong with SCOTUS. The man is a political legend. So when he talks, we should listen.
So, here’s his theory. He thinks that a Democrat will win the presidential election in 2028. He also thinks Dems will win the House and the Senate. (Considering how they just wiped the floor with the GOP, he may be on to something.) But that’s not the most controversial part…
Carville believes that the new Democrat president will recommend that the Supreme Court move from nine justices to thirteen. His rational is that the American people have lost trust in the Judicial branch to such a degree that something that drastic will have to happen to restore faith in that institution.
Is he right…? Maybe.
People have certainly lost faith in the Supreme Court. Polls show that favorable views of that institution are at a three-decade low. This is because of the partisan turn the court has taken recently.
So, Carville is right about that. But does that mean there will be enough displeasure to make such a drastic change…? The Voting Rights Act is on life support, and there is a case before the court this year that could essentially end it. (I expect them to.) There is some resistance from a few conservative justices to Trump’s tariff policies, but for the most part, the Supreme Court has acted like an arm of the president instead of something that is supposed to keep him in check.
Biden resisted calls to increase the number of justices to combat what Trump had done to the highest court in the land. But another president might feel differently. I hope they do — something must be done to bring balance back to the Supreme Court.
