The internet has been in a chokehold since Brittany Renner handed off her 4-year-old son to his father PJ Washington. Their custody exchange was captured on video and it was, in a word, heated.

To catch you up, Renner, who faced criticism online in June after converting to Islam then tossing her hijab aside because she’s “not interested in shrinking myself to fit in anywhere,” reportedly met Washington in 2019. They welcomed their son together, Paul Jermaine Washington III, in 2021, and eventually went their separate ways. Their long-standing and often public and contentious co-parenting often played out in the news, but over Labor Day weekend, things seemed to come to a head.
The viral clip opened with the “Basketball Wives” cast member and rapper Kevin Gates’ ex-wife of a whopping 52 days saying, “This is what we’re not doing. So every time that he does this, I’m gonna record because that’s not okay,” referring to their son, according to her, crying when he’s to go with Washington. Even her mom jumped in, telling Washington, “He doesn’t want to go with you!”
The insults only flew from there! Washington, who plays for the Dallas Mavericks, told Renner’s mother to… ahem— perform a sexual act on him. “$170,000 to your hoe… with $11,000 in your son’s account,” Renner said, before her mom called Washington out of his name and his wife, who was sitting in the passenger seat, gave her two cents.
After Washington’s wife, Alisah Chanel, yelled at Renner’s mother, she was invited to “get out the car”— possibly for a friendly round of fisticuffs. That’s when the clip abruptly ended.
Folks online shared their commentary.
“Most children that age cry when leaving their mom,” one person wrote, adding how, “She’s trying to make him look bad, but it’s backfiring.”
A second person wrote: “the sad part is, the kid’s the one carrying all the scars from grown folks who can’t co-parent in peace.” Someone else asked to be “removed from the group chat” while a fourth X user accused Renner and her mother of “itching for confrontation. They played antagonist the entire interaction.”
On Sept. 1, Washington, 27, seemingly addressed what went down with a post on X. He simply wrote: “God is Good,” while his wife posted the same day on Instagram how she gifted him a Rolls-Royce Cullinan because he “always went above and beyond.”
As of this writing, Renner, 33, hasn’t publicly addressed the clip, but folks are coming for her on Instagram. “We on PJs side,” one person wrote on her most recent post. Another said she has “to do better as a woman” while one Instagram user wrote: “So glad yall eating her up in these comments 🤣 it’s time we expose bitter bum’s for what they truly are.”
