The two music legends were on The Breakfast Club this week alongside Chaka Khan, promoting their “The Queens Tour.” While discussing their careers with host Charlamagne tha God, LaBelle revealed that she did not think she would have staying power in her career, specifically because she, “had an issue also with my being a Black woman with a big nose.”
She then explained that a “friend of hers” got her nose done, inspiring LaBelle to get the procedure as well. “I thought, ‘Oh, I think I need to try that. Maybe I’ll get more gigs,’ ” she explained. “I tried it. I did. I have a new nose.”
Mills then chimed in, immediately asking LaBelle if it was her she was referring to. “Was it me? You can say it, I don’t care. It was me.” She continued to explain that she had her nose done in the ’80s, and then went to Patti’s for dinner, where the “On My Own” singer saw it for the first time. “She said, ‘What did you do?’ I said, ‘I got my nose [done],’ and she was like, ‘I could get one.’”
Mills then explained, “I [got a nose job] and then [Patti] did… All of them do it. You know, all of the girls do it.” Mills also revealed that Michael Jackson himself inspired her to undergo the procedure, to the extent that she consulted the same doctor as the late King of Pop.
As for Chaka Khan? She told the hosts, “hell no” when asked if she had ever had cosmetic surgery. She added, “You could not cut me for nothing!”
As Charlamagne points out, cosmetic procedures have become more and more common these days, specifically in the entertainment industry. It’s refreshing to see these legends as transparent as they are with their own tweaks they’ve received. As LaBelle says in the interview, it’s something that people “shouldn’t be ashamed of.”
