An Ohio woman had ambushed a random mother and her toddler who had just finished grocery shopping in Ohio. She followed them into the supermarket parking lot and stabbed the three-year-old to death. She smirked in court when her bond was announced in June, but she wasn’t smiling when she was sentenced on Monday for the senseless murder that left a community heartbroken.

Bionca Ellis, according to police, first stole two knives from the Volunteers of America Thrift Store in North Olmsted, a Cleveland suburb on June 3, 2024. Afterwards, she spotted Margot Wood leaving a Giant Eagle supermarket next door, who was pushing her three-year-old son Julian Wood in a shopping cart to unload groceries into her car. Then, the unthinkable happened.
It only took five seconds for Ellis to stab the three-year-old as he sat in the cart. He died of his injuries. Margot was also injured in the heinous attack, but survived.
Ellis, 34, walked away from the scene and was later arrested by police– with the knife she used during the murder on her person. When she plead not guilty to the unprovoked attack, she was seen on video smiling, giggling, and making different faces. She was found guilty of aggravated murder, murder, attempted murder, and one count of endangering children, despite her attorneys arguing that she was not sane at the time of Julian’s murder.
Now, she just learned her fate.
On Monday (Oct. 27), Judge John Russo sentenced Ellis to the maximum sentence– life behind bars without parole. Her attorneys called the judge’s ruling “wrong,” and said they will appeal her sentence by reason of insanity.
“That woman murdering my son replays in my head every single day,” Wood said ahead of Ellis’ sentencing, per local Cleveland news station Fox 8. “It is my living nightmare. The last thing I will ever hear from my son is his scream and the sound of his pain and fear before he was gone. I can still see the terror in his eyes and it haunts me every day.”
Ellis did give a brief statement for her actions.
“I just want to apologize,” she said, according to 19 News. “I am really sorry for what happened.”
