Nick Cannon’s Latest Explanation for His 12 Kids Send Black America Spiraling

Nick Cannon had previously defended his decision to father so many kids and even teased more in the future. But now it looks like he’s feeling differently!

In news that can only be described as “IKYFL,” Nick Cannon is getting transparent about the reason behind his decision to father so many children. But unfortunately for him, that reasoning isn’t being too well-received online. Let’s get into it!

As we previously told you, the “Wild’N Out” host is a dad to 12 children. The first set of twins he had with his ex-wife Mariah Carey before going on to have: three more children with Brittany Bell; three kids with Abby De La Rosa; two kids with Alyssa Scott (one of which passed away from brain cancer in December 2021); one child with LaNisha Scott; and one child with Bre Tiesi.

Since having the children seemingly back to back, Cannon has often come under scrutiny for his perceived recklessness and he’s defended his hive of kids on multiple occasions. He even teased potentially welcoming even more bundles of joy in the future. But now, it seems like he’s backtracking on that and reexamining the fact that he fathered so many kids in a new interview.

Speaking to Charlamagne tha God on Monday during a chat with The Breakfast Club, Cannon explained that he now views him having so many kids as a trauma response, noting that he was being careless because he essentially had the resources to make up for it.

“It wasn’t like I was acting out. It was more of being careless, being frivolous with my process because I could do it, because I had the money [and] because I had the access to whoever and however I wanted to move,” he shared. “Then, obviously, life happens as well, so it wasn’t like ‘Oh, I’m gonna go have 12 kids.’ It was more about like, ‘Yo, I’m gonna just live life and have fun and whatever happens happens. I can handle it.’”

He went on to say that now, at 45, he feels as that if he could go back and really give the situation more thought and if he had done the “inner work” on himself after his divorce from Carey–he may not have had as many kids as he does now. Cannon did, however, make it clear that all of his kids were born out of love so he’s not saying with 100 percent certainty that they wouldn’t have come about at some point.

“If I would have did the work [and] the healing after getting divorced, I probably would have took my time in a lot other scenario,” he said. “And for whatever reason I thought that was the answer a lot of times, like ‘Oh, I’m gonna figure it out over here. Now, you’re leaving trauma every step of the way instead of fixing it from its origin.”

And while some people may give Cannon props online for his transparency and his realizations, others online weren’t too forgiving.

“He defended the hell outta have them 12 kids. Now he admits he was being careless. We all knew that already lol,” wrote one user on Instagram.

“12 kids and 12 broken homes later he came to that revelation,” said another.

“I’m not hearing it. He knew what he was doing and so did they,” one other user added.

But, over on X/Twitter, a handful of others praised The Masked Singer host for finally reaching this level of accountability.

“So Nick Cannon said him having all of those kids and creating broken homes was a trauma response & tbh I’m here for the ACCOUNTABILITY, wrote one user.

“This nick cannon interview confirming everything people were saying but it’s good to hear him admit it,” said another.

However, one user didn’t let him off the hook too much, writing on X/Twitter: “Nick Cannon admitting that him not healing after his divorce with MC is why he was being so careless is commendable…having that revelation after 12 kids is sick.”
