Nearly 30 years ago, Larenz Tate and Nia Long made us all fall in with Black love, thanks to their 1997 film “Love Jones.” As hard as it may be to believe, the two stars haven’t shared a screen together in a film since then. But it seems like all that’s about to change according to a new announcement on Wednesday!

Per Netflix, Tate and Jones will finally be reuniting for an upcoming romance movie, though details about the plot are being kept at a minimum. What we do know is that “Sylvie’s Love” director Eugene Ash will be at the helm of this film with singer Maxwell and his 1996 debut album “Urban Hang Suite” serving as the inspiration for the premise.
In a post to X/Twitter sharing the news on Thursday, Tate expressed his excitement to be back in action with long, writing in part: “REUNITED and it feels so good!!!! SUPER EXCITED to star along side the amazingly talented & phenomenal Nia Long! @NiaLong Devine timing indeed! Look forward to making magic with you.”
In a separate post to Instagram, Long echoed similar sentiments, penning in part: “The timing is divine and working with @larenztate is my favorite thing to do. We’re doing this one for YOU!!!! Thank you for all the love from the bottom of my heart and soul. Let’s go!”
Added Maxwell in the comments section, “Congratulations u are the most iconic example of black love.”
But perhaps no one was more excited than fans of Tate, Long and “Love Jones,” so it’s no wonder why this new project became the talk of the timelines once more folks got wind of it. And can you really blame them? The closest thing we’ve ever gotten to a reunion was when the two came together for that super sweet, super nostalgic ad for Walmart.
Now, we’re getting an actual Black romance film with the both of them again? And they’re both in their grown and sexy eras? Netflix needs to go ahead and drop that movie not now, but right now!
But if you thought we were the only ones excited, think again!
“This Larenz Tate, Nia Long, and Maxwell movie news has brought me so much joy!” said one user on X/Twitter.
“Black geriatric millennials across the world are having a collective meltdown,” said another.
“One of my favorite albums (no skips) with my two favorite ‘black love actors,’” one other user noted on Instagram.
Another social media user added, “We gonna just pretend this is Love Jones 2!! IDC.”
However, in a few surprising posts, some users weren’t so gung-ho about the prospect a new project.
“I have a maybe unpopular opinion about this, but they can keep it. I hate when we trap actors in a nostalgia box, esp Black actors. I admire ‘Love Jones’ like the next person, pero like…let’s leave romanticizing their chemistry there?” wrote on user on X/Twitter.
One other user said that as much as they loved the two actors, they’d prefer to see this opportunity go to some newer, up-and-coming stars.
Added one other person: “Sometimes you just gotta leave things be.”
What do you think? Does a potential “Love Jones 2” sound appealing or should we just leave good enough alone?
