“Cabaret” was already scheduled to end its Broadway run on Oct. 19 after completing over 600 shows over the past year. But in an Instagram post, the show producers revealed Porter is suffering from an unexpected health condition, which means the show can’t go on.

“Due to a serious case of sepsis, Billy Porter must also withdraw from the production,” the Instagram post read. The 55-year-old has previously been open about his ongoing battle with HIV and with diabetes. It’s unclear if any of that played a direct role in his current state.

As defined by the Mayo Clinic, sepsis is a life-threatening condition where the body can’t fight off infections. It’s one of the leading causes of death in the U.S, according to AAMC. Still, the “Cabaret” team said Porter’s medical team is hopeful.

“His doctors are confident that he will make a full recovery but have advised him to maintain a restful schedule,” the statement continued. In response, the musical will end two weeks ahead of schedule on September 21 at the Kit Kat Club at the August Wilson Theatre in New York City.

“Cabaret” was revived for Broadway in April of last year. The show was originally produced in 1966 and won a Tony Award in 1967. In 1972, it was adapted into a film. “Billy was an extraordinary Emcee, bringing his signature passion and remarkable talent,” producer Adam Speers of ATG Productions said in a separate statement. “We wish Billy a speedy recovery and I look forward to working with him again in the very near future.”

This shocking news comes just as the Broadway show has seen a slump in viewership over the past several weeks, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The Emmy and Tony award winning 55-year-old played Emcee in the musical. Marty Lauter and David Merino will act in Porter’s place, producers confirmed.
