Former Vice President Kamala Harris may no longer have the Secret Service watching her back, but as the current climate has led to an increase in politically-motivated violence, other agencies have stepped in to keep her safe. According to CBS News, members of the Los Angeles Police Department’s elite divisions, including the Tactical Response Teams, which secure the city during high-profile events, along with the California Highway Patrol, have been called to protect her.

Unlike presidents, who receive lifetime protection, federal law provides former vice presidents, along with their spouses and young children, with Secret Service protection for up to six months after they leave office. But in recent years, the political climate has called for extra protection for elected officials, even after they leave office. President Joe Biden signed an Executive Order that would provide a one-year extension for Vice President Harris just before he left office, according to CNN.
However, President Donald Trump took another trip to Pettyville last week when he sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, asking her to revoked Harris’ protection this month.
“You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris,” Trump’s letter read.
Recent intelligence assessments have not found any recent credible threats to the former VP. But it’s not lost on us that Trump’s revocation of Harris’ security detail comes just as the first Black female Vice President of the United States is preparing to go on tour to promote her new memoir, “107 Days,” which is scheduled to be released on September 23.
Democrats can’t help but see Trump’s move as just another attack on his perceived enemies. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass went as far as saying that removing her protection puts VP Harris in danger.
“This is another act of revenge following a long list of political retaliation in the form of firings, the revoking of security clearances and more,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass told Fox 11.
But one X user is asking the question we all have on our minds right now, posting, “By removing secret service protection for Kamala Harris, Trump just set a precedent for the next administration to revoke protection for his own family and JD Vance’s family. That’s how it works, right?”
