A North Carolina grandfather suffered gunshot wounds after firing back at three home invaders—and possibly killing one of them, News 2 reports. The suspects also reportedly tried to rape his teenage granddaughter.

According to reports by the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began on Monday around 10 p.m. when someone knocked on the door of the Lumberton home of the 67-year-old man, his wife and 19-year-old granddaughter.

Two of the three suspects, who were reportedly wearing black clothes, ski masks and gloves, pushed into the home, demanding money. The grandfather and his wife were ordered at gunpoint to open a safe. Meanwhile, all three armed men allegedly tried to rape the granddaughter.

That was when the grandfather grabbed a gun, firing at the three suspects. The suspects shot back, hitting the grandfather multiple times. They then fled in the man’s gold Cadillac, News 2 notes.

McLeod Hospital in Dillon, N.C., contacted authorities when two men with gunshot wounds showed up.

The sheriff’s office later got a tip that led officers to the body of 20-year-old Jamie Lee Faison in the stolen Cadillac. Faison had died from gunshot wounds.

The grandfather was taken to a hospital before being airlifted to another medical center, according to the news station.

"He is out of surgery but is still critical in ICU!! Thanks everyone for all your prayers just keep them coming!!! But the intruders have been caught!!!" one relative, Sherri Bridgeman, posted on Facebook, according to the news site.

The other suspects, identified as Brandon Carver Stephens and Jamar Hawkins, were also airlifted for emergency surgery.
