N.C. Hospital Patient Accused of Throwing His HIV-Infected Blood in the Eyes of Hospital Staff

Two Raleigh hospital employees were allegedly assaulted while on the job, and there’s finally a new update.

Not one, but two North Carolina hospital employees were reportedly on the receiving end of a ghastly attack by a patient after he allegedly weaponized his own bodily fluid against them. Six months later, there’s a new update after the man allegedly did the unthinkable with compromised blood.

On March 21, 2025, Kameron Gilchrist received care for diabetes at the UNC Health Rex hospital in Raleigh. The 25-year-old allegedly not only removed his IV, but proceeded to spray HIV-positive blood into the eyes of two hospital staffers. It’s unclear whether the two staffers contracted HIV after the exposure, but an arrest warrant says they did incur physical injuries including irritation.

Gilchrist was arrested Sept. 11 and charged with two counts of assaulting emergency personnel during the bizarre incident. It took so long for Gilchrist to be apprehended because, according to reports, he had been receiving both medical and psychiatric care in the time since, and couldn’t be arrested then.

Gilchrist is being held on a $25,000 bond. His next court date is scheduled for Dec. 8, and if convicted, he faces up to seven years in the slammer.

A UNC Health Rex spokesperson told WRAL News that the hospital is working closely with authorities and that additional security are in place to protect its staff.

Unfortunately, the healthcare industry has some of the highest rates of workplace violence across all occupations, according to a Bureau of Labor Statistics’ report.

In June, a 30-year-old male patient allegedly punched a 76-year-old female worker repeatedly who was assigned to sit with him overnight, CBS News reported at the time, at Dallas’ Baylor University Medical Center in a completely unprovoked attack. The woman was rendered unconscious and had to undergo surgery for her severe injuries. He was ultimately charged with six counts of felonious assault.

That incident, and others— including when two nurses and a medical resident were stabbed inside a New Jersey pediatric intensive care unit at Newark Beth Israel Hospital in late 2023— sparked a larger conversation online about hospital staff safety.

“This is what happens when people don’t fear prosecution,” one person wrote on X.

One nurse wrote on social media: “this happens every day…verbal and physical abuse… we all have stories,” per CBS News.

“Remember when we all used to clap every night to thank doctors, nurses, scientists, & public health workers for saving lives? […] people in these professions are now frequently threatened & attacked,” another person penned on X. “There is no way society can keep functioning like this.”
