Virginia State Police say that Marisa Harris, 22, from Olney, Md., was driving east on Interstate 66 when the child jumped from the Cedar Lane overpass and landed on her Ford Escape, NBC Washington reports.

The jump left Harris “incapacitated,” Fox News notes, but Harris’ boyfriend, who was sitting on the passenger’s side of the SUV at the time of the incident, managed to steer the vehicle to the side of the road.

Harris, a graduate student at Marymount University in Arlington, Va., died at the scene. The child survived and was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police are investigating the jump as an attempted suicide, NBC notes.
