Live Blog: Michael Cohen Is Doing His Best Operatic Solo In Front of Congress Right Now

The day of reckoning has come. Michael Cohen, the president’s former fixer, former attorney, the Spliff Star to the president’s Busta Rhymes, the Ty-Ty to the president’s Jay Z, the Gayle to his Oprah is testifying before the House Oversight Committee and it’s about to be lit.

The Root senior editor Stephen A. Crockett Jr. and news editor Monique Judge are watching the whole damn thing because we don’t watch the NFL and we are nerds, so this is our Super Bowl.

This Was Good

Overall, this testimony was enjoyable to watch if for no other reason than I liked the freshmen members of the House who stepped up and called their colleagues out for what they were doing—being dumb assholes.

Michael Cohen didn’t necessarily give us any new information that we hadn’t already heard through the grapevine, but he gave us an opportunity to see up close personal how some of our representatives act and how they bend over backwards to protect Trump.

But Mr. Meadows Is Racist-Y

I don’t know what the hell I’m watching. Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) drudged out Lynne Patton, a black woman, earlier in the proceedings to show that Trump does like black people because here’s one black woman who can speak to what a kind and caring massa employer he’s been during her time in the big house. Several members took issue with the move. Rep Rashida Talib (D-Mi.) said that the move was racist.

Well, hold on a goddamn minute. Did someone of color call a white man’s actions racist?! Not on Mark Meadows watch! Meadows sprung into action calling his nieces and nephews, who apparently have some color in their genealogy, to explain that he wouldn’t be called racist! Not on his watch. Not, today.

Talib apologized and Meadows felt like he’d grandstanded (grandstood?) enough and calmed the fuck down.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib Is Not Here for the Bullshit Either

Michael Cohen just told Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mi.) that he does not believe Donald Trump is acting in the best interest of the American people. He also acknowledged that just because a person has a black person working from them doesn’t mean they aren’t racist.

Who Is This Woman? She's Driving Me Crazy!

I’m having trouble watching the proceedings as a woman with a Farah Fawcett up-do is making all the faces. All. Of. Them. She’s like a white version of Nelson Mandela’s funeral sign language interpreter.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Wants to Know All About the Money

She wants to know about the president’s inheritance, she wants to know about his taxes, she wants to know about it golf course and how he was able to skirt taxes. Sounds like AOC she’s working up angle for more to come.

Come Through, AOC!

I’m here for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez if for no other reason than she is the Cardi B of Congress, Okurrrr?

We Are Back

Michael Cohen still looks like a sad basset hound, Republicans are still fighting mad, and Democrats are still trying to use one of Trump’s closest confidants for the past decade as a vessel of information for impeachment.

Another Break

Not us, them. Congress has taken another break and when they come back, we’ll be back. Until then read our earlier posts and try to catch up.

Rep. Brenda Lawrence Is Not Here for the Shenanigans

She just rightfully called out the GOP reps for trotting out a black woman as a means of dispelling any idea that Donald Trump could be a racist—especially in light of the fact that we have seen him do it in real time on national television over and over again.

Cohen Rigged Polls at Trump’s Behest

Michael Cohen just admitted that he hired someone to help rig polls in Donald Trump’s favor in 2014 and 2015, and he did so at Trump’s request.

Of course all of that is going to get ignored because he’s a disbarred liar who is going to prison and will probably get a book and/or film deal.

New Republican Strategy

Shame Cohen about being a liar. Ask him if he’s got a book deal. Talk about the insanity and political theatre that this hearing has become. Ask Cohen which version of his truth the public should believe. Say something catchy like, “Were you lying then, or are you lying now?!” Grandstand. Say something about their constituents back at home. Mention that Cohen is going to prison. Yield time to Rep. Jim Jordan.

Listen...

Michael Cohen was already disbarred yesterday, so all of this discussion about whether this or that was ethical is irrelevant at this point. We need to discuss the information that he has, but the Republicans are wholly uninterested in that.

Trump Paid Cohen In Partial Payments

Cohen claims that it was decided that Trump would pay him back for the Stormy Daniels hush money payment in 12 payments to be made monthly to look like he was paying a retainer fee for Cohen’s services.

Trump Does Not Have a Lovechild

Cohen just told the committee that Donald Trump does not have a lovechild to his knowledge.

Now that is an interesting bit of tea, because apparently someone was paid off to keep that story for coming out. Why pay anyone if it wasn’t true?

Rep. Clay Higgins Feels Racist-y

I don’t know the Louisiana Republican, but he sounds like all of the old South. He looks like he drives a pickup truck with a Confederate flag. And he’s talking about being a cop and and locking up people, with the glee of someone who has dressed in all camouflage to go hunting. I don’t know if Clay Higgins is and actual racist but he sounds and looks very racist-y.

We’re Still Talking About Film and Book Deals?

What does any of this matter, and why are they trying to use it as a means of discrediting his testimony?

Literally everyone who comes out of this administration ends up spilling their guts. Why is that the determining factor as to whether or not someone is telling the truth?

And once again, Trump is the biggest liar of them all, so dying on that hill at this point in time has got to be exhausting.

Cohen Confirms Trump Lied Under Oath

Cohen just confirmed that Donald Trump lied when he said he did not know Felix Sater, a Russian-born businessman in Brooklyn.

Don't Forget This Part....

Cohen said that he couldn’t talk about the last conversation that he had with the president, which would’ve been about two months after Cohen’s New York office was raided because that’s being investigated by the Southern District of New York.

So the Republicans Are Mad That Cohen Might Get a Book Deal?

I’m not sure why the focus is on how Cohen might get a book deal after this. People get book deals all the time after being involved in scandals. Can we please stick to the matter at hand?

NDAs Used as a Means of Silencing People

Cohen has just admitted that the president’s usage of non-disclosure agreements is a means of silencing people and making then afraid to come forward with any information about him.

We're Back and Republicans Are Still Big Mad

All of the Republicans, all of them, are still mad that they have to sit across from this liar, Michael Cohen, whom they feel is being used to shame the liar-in-chief.
