On June 17, 2024, Anne Arundel County Police Department responded to a call about a shooting in Odenton, just 20 miles south of Baltimore. Upon their arrival, they found Isaiah Olugbemi, an up-and-coming amateur boxer who had won a Golden Gloves national championship in the 203-pound division, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a hospital where he died from his injuries– just three weeks after winning the boxing championship.

The man who confessed to killing him, Nicholas Francis Giroux, 37, said on a recorded jailhouse call that was played in court how that’s “what happens when you f*ck with my sleep schedule. You don’t wake up.” He shot Olugebemi over loud music.

Surveillance footage captured the moment when Giroux approached his 27-year-old neighbor and shot him several times with a handgun. He then returned, Law & Crime reported, to fire three more shots before walking back to his townhome and fleeing the scene in a van. That fatal incident wasn’t the first time Giroux approached his neighbors for playing loud music. Prosecutors say just two weeks before, Giroux confronted the victim over his family’s music’s volume during a cookout. He allegedly brandished a handgun then, but didn’t point it at anyone so he wasn’t arrested.

Giroux also reportedly accused Olugbemi’s family of being drug dealers, therefore the state was better off without him and how “I still want my medal of honor.” In February, Giroux plead guilty to first-degree murder and use of a firearm in a crime of violence. He was sentenced Tuesday (Aug. 26) to life in prison plus 20 years for murdering his neighbor.

Olugbemi, a New York native who moved to Maryland when he was in elementary school, according to his obituary, was on his high school’s football, wrestling, and track teams. The victim’s brother, Daniel Olugbemi, told WRC that “the world lost a gem” who had pivoted to boxing where he excelled and became a rising star in the sport.

“I can tell you that without any doubt,” he said. “It’s the loss for the world, because Isaiah had so much to offer. And it was just cut short at the prime of his life.”

State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess called his murder “cruel and senseless.” She added: “The callousness and lack of remorse on the part of this Defendant is really disturbing. He deserves this sentence.”
