Black people keep getting fired in 2025. But this time, it’s not the Trump administration letting people go. CBS had mass layoffs this week. In fact, CBS reportedly gave everyone who was in charge of covering race for the network their marching orders.

Bari Weiss, who is now the Editor-in-chief of CBS News, completely dismantled the Race and Culture division because, well, who cares about what’s happening to Black folks?
Trey Sherman, a now-former news producer who worked in the division that is now dismantled and for the now-canceled ‘CBS Evening News+’ since February, claimed on a viral video posted to his TikTok account that the firings were race based. He did not mince words, claiming “every person who got let go was a person of color.” Yet, “every person who got relocated and got to stay is a white person.”
And then there’s the drama happening with Gayle King.
Oprah’s best friend (or “Lil Oprah” as she is called on social media) took an ill-advised trip to space for the network back in March. (That trip still doesn’t make any sense.) But despite her putting her life on the line for the network, things are not looking great for her right now. According to multiple outlets, she is almost certainly getting the boot. There does seem to be some confusion about what’s happening. She said that what she’s hearing “in the building” is different from the press reports. “All I’ve been told by everybody in this building is that they want me here, the like the job I’m doing, I like the job I am doing.”
CBS denied reports that King is stepping down and said they had no discussions about her contract that ends in May of next year.
There is more. The co-hosts of “CBS Saturday Morning,” Michelle Miller (who is Black) and Dana Jacobson, were let go. And the CBS News bureau in Johannesburg, South Africa has been shut down, with coverage of Africa shifting to London.
Paramount, the parent company of CBS, was sold to David Ellison’s Skydance media back in August. Ellison, now the CEO of CBS news, has not been quiet about his affinity for the president. In fact, his love of Trump is why the creator of ‘Yellowstone’ said he would not work with the company anymore.
So, Trump and his administration are not the ones doing the firing, but many folks on social media believe the Commander in Chief could be influencing what’s happening.
