Malia Obama is doing the gap year thing right: The elder daughter of former President Barack Obama will soon start work as an intern for Hollywood superproducer Harvey Weinstein.
Malia Obama, 18, who graduated from Sidwell Friends School last May, according to the Washington Post, and is set to begin undergraduate studies at Harvard University in the fall of 2017, will begin an internship in Weinstein’s New York office starting in February, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
According to the Post, after the Jan. 20 inauguration activities, the Obama family will vacation in Palms Springs, Calif., after which Malia Obama will begin her internship with Weinstein. She has an interest in film and previously interned for the Halle Berry CBS series Extant as well as the HBO series Girls.
The Weinstein Co. is run by brothers Harvey and Bob Weinstein and is the independent studio behind films such as The Artist and The King’s Speech. Its film Lion is currently an Oscar contender.
Harvey Weinstein is noted by the Hollywood Reporter to be a reliable donor to Democratic causes and candidates including Barack Obama, for whom he had several fundraisers over the years.
There is no word yet on which department Malia Obama will be working for.
