As we previously told you, on July 20, the world was shocked to learn that “The Cosby Show” actor died while on a family vacation in Costa Rica. He was 54. Per early reporting, other surfers rushed to help when they spotted Warner and his eight-year-old daughter struggling while they were swimming on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. While one was allegedly able to bring Warner’s daughter safely to shore on his board, other who pulled Warner to shore were unable to revive him.
Now, in a new interview with “Good Morning America” on Tuesday, Pamela is shedding new light on the events of that day. One of the first things she shared is that contrary to reports, her granddaughter was not in the water with her father at the time of his tragic accident. Malcolm-Jamal was reportedly swimming with another gentleman when he got swept in the “undertow.”
Malcom’s daughter did, however, have to witness people try to resuscitate her father over and over again, which only added to her the child’s trauma, according to Pamela.
“She was not in the water. He was with another gentleman,” Pamela explained. “They were in the water, I think maybe chest deep, even at that–maybe waist deep. There was an undertow, and my son was not an experienced swimmer. He did not know how to deal with an undertow.”
Pamela went on to explain the whole reason behind why the family was there in Costa Rica in the first place, sharing that her granddaughter was being homeschooled and went to the foreign country as a part of an immersion program. Malcolm-Jamal’s wife Tenisha and daughter had been there for three weeks before the actor’s joined them during the last week of the program.
“[It was] “for the husbands to come,” Pamela said before noting it was supposed to be “the fun part.”
Sadly, any semblance of joy and exuberance they’d experience would be cut short due to the actor’s untimely death. As it nears two months since his passing, Pamela also detailed that while she come to me “at peace” with what happened–Tenisha and their child are still actively grieving.
“Children process differently,” Pamela explained. “She watched them resuscitate him, try to resuscitate him. She saw that, and I know that’s awfully, awfully traumatic.”
She added: “She loved her father dearly. She adored Papa. He was Papa. And so they’re both in deep grief.”
