Speaking at the historic 16th Street Baptist Church for an โ€œEmpower Usโ€ event in Alabama, the longtime actor told Alabama Life & Culture that while he doesnโ€™t totally rule out the possibility of it happeningโ€”it may not be in the same format as it was before, proposing instead that it could potentially come back as a series. But, he admitted that it would be hard to recapture the magic from the beloved โ€˜90s film.

โ€œIt would be hard for us to catch lightning in the bottle twice. So Nia [Long, costar of Love Jones] and I have been trying to figure out what that would look like. But we feel like we should do something, but something different. TV show, movies that could be a franchiseโ€”weโ€™ve discussed everything,โ€ the Girls Trip star explained. โ€œWe talked about all kinds of stuff because we know what โ€˜Love Jonesโ€™ meant, we know what those characters meant, and we know what the message and the story meant to us. And we donโ€™t want to disrupt that, we donโ€™t want to shake that up, and do something that doesnโ€™t live up to our expectations of our audience would want from us.โ€

He later added: โ€œI hope we come up with something sooner than later. Iโ€™m tired of people asking me about Love Jones 2 and I just want to go ahead and put that to rest and get into production.โ€

Iโ€™m right there with you, Larenz! And if you needed more proof of a beloved Black franchise film that turned their last followup sequel into a successful seriesโ€”look no further than The Best Man: The Final Chapters. Released last year, the show made folks a bit skeptical upon its initial announcement as many shared the same hesitancies as Larenze about whether or not the sequel could live up the beauty of the films. But as we saw, both through audience reactions and subsequent rave reviews: if youโ€™re intentional and get all the right people in the roomโ€”you can still make the magic happen so many years later.
