The incident unfolded just outside a Kohl’s in Jacksonville, Florida, where a white employee — identified as Shelby in the viral video — is seen aggressively demanding a receipt, rummaging through the Black customer’s shopping bag, and accusing her of having pants and sweaters she didn’t pay for.
“You’re saying I need a receipt for what? Why are you checking my bag?” the customer asked. “Ma’am, I just need the receipt for the two pants,” the employee replied. The shopper offered the employee her receipt without hesitation. “Kohls is about to get sued!” the shopper exclaimed.
“There were sweaters they said,” the employee added, aggressively digging through the bag. “I paid her!” the shopper declared. Needless to say, the employee was left apologizing. When the customer asked for the employee’s name, she refused to respond, and quickly walked away.
Fans didn’t waste a second sounding off in the comment section, and they appeared just as frustrated as the Kohls shopper. “Once a customer leaves the store they’re not supposed to bag check. Sue!” one viewer wrote.
“Now you can take it all back and give me all my money,” a second suggested. “The workers name is Shelby. I just paused the video and zoomed in. IG do your thing,” a third suggested. “You about to lose yo job,” a fourth sang.
The viral video has sparked outrage online, with many demanding accountability from Kohl’s and the employee involved. The incident highlights ongoing issues of racial profiling in retail spaces and raises urgent questions about customer rights and corporate responsibility.
Kohl’s has yet to issue a public response.
