Justin J. Pearson on What the State of the Union Address Should Really Means for Black Folks

Tenn. politician Justin J. Pearson broke down exactly what all Black folks should take away from Trump’s State of the Union address on Feb. 24.

The recent nearly two-hour address, dominated by Donald Trump’s self-praise and punctuated by his caucus’s seemingly reasonless applause, offered absolutely nothing of substance. The public was left wanting; what should have been heard from the President of the United States was a concrete plan to address the affordability crisis burdening the populace. This includes policy and legislative actions to improve Medicare and medical access, provide universal healthcare, and tackle the skyrocketing housing crisis that has led to an increase in unhoused individuals and made it prohibitively difficult for first-time home buyers in the United States.

Regarding the ensuing protests, it is clear that people are responding as they feel called, with no singular right or wrong way. Whether through boycotts, confrontational demands, or other forms of opposition, the resistance to the tyranny of this administration is resoundingly clear. The Democratic Party stands as the sole opposition to the racist, wannabe dictator Donald Trump and his Republican Party, which appears entirely and unconditionally aligned with him, despite the damage inflicted upon the American people. This context is crucial to remember, as what the public witnesses is merely a facade.

For any observers potentially inclined to praise the State of the Union, it is vital to recognize the current state of Constitutional crisis. Congress must actively serve as the check against the administration’s rogue abuses of power.

The Democratic Party is effectively driving home a message that resonates across the American spectrum: a commitment to making life more affordable. This involves reigning in the administration’s abuses, from tariffs to improving healthcare access, and redirecting billions in wealth from the wealthiest individuals and corporations back to the taxpayers. The focus is squarely on the economy and equipping people to live more affordably. Concurrently, the fight to preserve American democracy and Constitutional rights—which are under siege—is paramount. This includes the First Amendment right to protest and the Fourth Amendment protection against unwarranted judicial process or seizure of property.

These two issues are what the American public is most receptive to. They sense an abuse of power by the president and understand that the consequences will disproportionately affect those with less wealth and power. The crushing weight of costs—from grocery bills to medical co-pays—demands reprieve and relief, which the Republican Party and the Trump administration are unwilling to provide. Therefore, the focus must remain steadfastly on these critical areas.

Justin J. Pearson is a Tenn. state representative and candidate for U.S. Congress.
