When youβve been in the business as long as Denzel Washington, there are a lot of crazy stories about you circulating through Hollywood. His βAmerican Gangsterβ co-star Josh Brolin recently recalled a surprising moment when the two actors nearly came to blows.
In an interview on βIn Depth With Graham Bensinger,β the βAvengers: Endgameβ star explained that the two actors almost got in a fight while rehearsing Brolinβs lines for a scene in the classic crime drama. In the video, you can catch his comments on the moment beginning at 1:55:05.

βI was trying to remember the structure, and then we rehearsed. It wasnβt that many lines, mostly mine. And Iβm supposed to be super confident,β Brolin said. βItβs Denzel Washington, man. Itβs, like, not easy. Youβre just this actor who theyβre trying out, seeing if heβs the real thing or not. And I forgot a line.β
The βOuter Rangeβ star revealed that things quickly went downhill from there. As he looked to the Oscar winner for help, Washington clearly wasnβt in the mood, the incident escalated and Brolin wondered if he was about to fight a legend.
βI put my hand on his shoulder and I said, βWhatβs the line?β and he hit my hand off and he said, βDonβt ever fβ-ing put your hand on me. And I was like, βHoly sβ-, Iβm gonna scrap with Denzel Washington,β he said. βThis is crazy.β Weβre not actors anymoreβ¦at least in my mind.β
Now with the perspective of his own long, successful career behind him, the 56-year-old thinks Washington was just deep in character and preserving his vibe for the scene.
βIn his mind, he was just doing his job. He was that guy. He was Frank Lucas, period. But I didnβt know,β Brolin said.. βAnd then we got through that moment. I said, βAre you OK?β He said, βYeah. You?β I said, βYeah. Can I get my line?β He said, βGo for it.β Itβs like heβd said what he needed to say.β
Brolin explained that the actors βget along very well now,β with Washington greeting him warmly a year after they made the movie. As an older actor, he totally understands the desire to stay in the moment during a scene.
