Just when you thought the controversy surrounding Bishop Marvin Winans and his “rebuke” of a congregant’s offering was over, Tyler Perry just entered the chat. And as you could probably suspect, many people online have a whole lot to say about it!

As we previously told you, on Oct. 19, Winans, leader of Perfecting Church in Detroit, held a “Day of Giving” in an effort to raise enough funds to finish building the sanctuary. While that’s not something out of the ordinary, where things went south was when a woman named Roberta McCoy got up to give her donation of $1,235 dollars. That’s when the bishop “rebuked” her and told her that her offering amount wasn’t what he asked for in front of the whole church.
Both Winans and McCoy would later defend the viral moment, with the latter saying she didn’t get rebuked, but rather corrected because she gave out of turn. As for Winans, he said he was merely trying to give his churchgoers proper instructions on how and when to give so that things could be conducted in an orderly fashion.
Yet and still, that wasn’t enough to keep the “Just Don’t Wanna Know” singer from getting dragged online by users who felt he was being rude, ungrateful, and outright ugly towards McCoy and her voluntary offering.
Now, however, it looks like all the “bad publicity” has done some good based off a now viral clip from Sunday morning’s worship service at Winans’ church. In it, he revealed that because of all the hubub, people from all over began reaching out to see how they could donate. That’s when he shared that a big Hollywood producer– namely Perry– decided to give a size-able donation.
“We have received, one person called and he said ‘tell my name!’ He said ‘because I know God is in this. Tyler Perry sent $100,000,” Winans shared as the rest of the church shouted and danced with glee.
Unfortunately, by the time news of Perry’s generosity began to make the rounds on the internet, others weren’t so positive about it.
“I normally love Tyler…But this ain’t it tbh [to be honest],” wrote one user on Instagram.
“This not the move he thought it was. Weird. Just weird,” said another.
“Did he give the lady he disrespected anything? Did anyone address his behavior oh ok?” one other user questioned.
“This Marvin Winans situation is why I stepped away from Christianity back in 2012. Just greedy and condescending. Tyler Perry only donated that $100K to clean his image up cause he’s a creep,” one user said.
Over on TikTok, even more people wondered why Perry wouldn’t give that money to people who really needed it with one person writing: “Can he donate 100k to people who are really in need .. like federal workers.”
Another user pointed out Perry being specific enough to ask for the bishop to tell people his name, writing in part on TikTok, “Tell my name because ik God is in this is crazy and just prideful! God is NOT in any of this.”
For TikTok user The Main Darian, he went so far as to allude that Perry’s giant donation was just a way to garner up some positive news for him considering the shocking sexual assault lawsuit he’s currently facing from one of his former employees.
“I think the Black community gon’ have to come to an understanding about they favorite Madea because whenever Madea needs the Black community–all of a sudden goodness comes from his camp, if you get what I’m saying or what I’m putting down or whatever,” Darian said in part. “Anything he does privately, always finds a way to be out publicly.”
