Claressa Shields may be gearing up for another fight in the ring, but before she gets there, she’ll have to fight off folks trashing her online. Once we tell you why, you’ll understand what we mean.

The Olympic gold medalist boxer became the subject of social media fodder on Thursday thanks to a new interview she did on “The Pivot” podcast. While there to discuss the highs and lows of her career, things eventually shifted to the topic of legacy and she plans on building hers. That’s when Shields mentioned that she and her partner Papoose (yes, rapper Remy Ma’s estranged husband Papoose) were planning on welcoming a child in 2026.
“I’m gonna have a baby next year. We already had it planned out. I’m gonna have baby next year. And then after I go through my stuff, then I’ll come back and fight and fight some more, and then probably have another one and then do the same thing again,” she said.
She went on to say that she’d prefer not to wait until she’s in her 40s to have a child as she wants to be able to be active with them and mobile enough to keep up with them. She also detailed a few things she was doing ahead of time to help prepare herself and her body.
“I think that keeping my body in shape — I don’t drink, I don’t smoke — I think that’ll also help me too when I’m going through this whole body and life changing stuff or, you know, whatever, next year,” she said.
However, once her words made the rounds on the internet, a lot of folks took issue with Shields’ plans and the fact that both she and Papoose were allegedly making these plans while he’s still legally married to Remy Ma. To clarify, the two have been separated since May 2022, but on paper, they’re still one unit. As such, Shields’ comments didn’t land all that well.
“Claressa Shields telling the world she’s trying to have a baby with a married ass man makes me realize she needs supervision,” wrote one user on X/Twitter.
“‘Hi my name is Claressa Shields and I’m online talking about having a baby with a married man, all while being the same age as his eldest child’ . Does papoose want a baby?” said another.
Added another: “Claressa Shields is a PHENOMENAL fighter! Very much talented. But she’s a bird brain when it comes to men. Like your dude still married and you talking about having his baby soon? It’s giving this her first real deal relationship.”
One other user wrote, “You’re a professional boxer tryna be somebody’s 4th baby mama and fight reality tv stars…wtf happened to claressa shields.”
