Willow Smith isn’t usually in the headlines like that anymore…but that all changed on Monday (Nov. 24). And it’s all thanks to a viral video with a man trying to flirt with her and seemingly shoot his shot!

But before we get to that, let’s get into a little bit of context. Near the top of October, the “Empathogen” singer went viral on Instagram after she posed a dating question to her fans and followers. Specifically, she asked if people really approach others to ask them out on dates anymore. She revealed that she couldn’t remember the last time someone asked her explicitly if she’d like to go on a date with them and said that it may be an old school concept that she’d bringing back.
“I don’t even remember the last time someone was like ‘hey, would you wanna go on a date with me?’ Like…I’m gonna start saying it again,” Smith said at the time.
Well, fast forward to late November and it looks like the exact scenarios may have finally played out for her…to an extent. If you don’t know what we’re talking about, we’re referring to the now-viral video uploaded over the weekend that showed Smith getting approached by a man while out with her friends.
In the video, the “Whip My Hair” singer could be heard thanking the man recording for stopping by and saying hi. He then proceeds to give her a compliment before asking how old she is.
After joking that she’s “35,000 years old,” Smith said: “There’s something in the Sumerian texts that could tell you–bro. You enjoy yourself please, we’re having a great night, ya know? We’re living it up.”
Afterwards, a male friend of hers could be heard saying “I think she’s good,” before giving the guy a friendly nod.
As you might expect, given her previous stance about people approaching people romantically and her response to this guy, folks online had mixed feelings. While some thought she was justified in her reaction, others felt as if she was contradicting herself.
“…Then how does one get to know you…if they can’t be a stranger first… damn even your parents were strangers,” wrote one user on X/Twitter.
“She just like her mother i fear.. just yappin,” said another.
“You say you want this but react diffently when it happens. This is not normal but confusing to others who genuinely are trying to understand you,” one other person said in part.
However, there were those who took up for the “Meet Me At Our Spot” singer.
“Approaching anybody and filming them on the introduction is hella weird,” one user wrote.
Added one other person: “The fact that these comments under this post make her out to be weird because she didn’t give him a chance is alarming. Why would you approach a girl you want with a camera on her face? That’s not genuine at all. Its clout chasing.”
“Y’all think it’s normal to “shoot your shot” with your phone recording them?” said another.
