It was the morning of Feb. 15, 2024, when the girl’s mother received a call from her school because she was absent. The mom returned to her home, according to Law & Crime, on North Manor Avenue in Beach Park, Illinois, where she lived with Demetrius Fisher, whom she was dating. Upon arrival, she saw Fisher walking out. When he saw the girl’s mother, he fled.

The mother found her daughter suffering from multiple stab wounds to her arms, back, and neck before rushing her to the Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. She was listed in critical condition, but thankfully survived the attempted murder.

Apparently the girl was stomping around the house, which prompted Fisher, 32, to grab a kitchen knife and repeatedly stab her. But, he made sure to protect himself from injury while stabbing the little girl. Prosecutors said he admitted he just “snapped,” and grabbed an oven mitt so he wouldn’t suffer injuries. He also punched the girl to the ground.

CBS News reported Fisher was later arrested at a Metra station in Waukegan. Lake County prosecutors said he admitted to stabbing the girl.

When told by authorities that the girl survived, he was surprised, and his response was: “But did you see her neck?”

Fisher plead guilty to attempted first-degree murder on Sept. 11 He was also charged with aggravated battery to a child causing permanent disability, three counts of armed violence, three counts of aggravated battery to a child causing bodily harm and aggravated domestic battery, but those charges were dismissed. A judge sentenced him to 27 years at the Illinois Department of Corrections for the gruesome crime.

The stabbing was so heinous that even Illinois Senator Adriane Johnson spoke out about it.

“A child is now in critical condition with life-threatening injuries due to a heinous crime committed by a household member. That is beyond devastating,” she said at the time, adding how, “Every child deserves a safe home – a loving, caring place where they feel protected.”

Senator Johnson also said: “It is imperative that we continue to advocate for and provide protections for our children. […] I vow to prioritize the health, safety and well-being of children and those who work to protect them.”
