Or at least, that’s the sentiment being put out across social media timelines in the days after the first “Michael” teaser trailer dropped. As we already told you, this upcoming biopic will take a look at Michael Jackson’s life beyond the music, tracing his journey from the discovery of his extraordinary talent as the lead of the Jackson Five, to the visionary artist whose creative ambition fueled a relentless pursuit to become the biggest entertainer in the world. This also marks the first time the King of Pop will be getting a full, feature-length movie done about his life and legacy.
The forthcoming film has already garnered a myriad of responses from people online, but what’s starting to become increasingly clear is that the anticipation for this film is slowly but surely creeping up to the same level as the two aforementioned, gargantuan films. Specifically, in the same way Black folks came dressed in all-black, purple or any other African royalty garb or cosplayed the characters–Black people are once again collectively deciding to do the same for “Michael.”
Don’t believe us? One look on social media will prove you wrong.
“Idk about yall, but when this Michael Jackson biopic hits theaters I’m getting a fit off,” wrote one user on Threads.
“Chile and y’all thought black people was extra going to see the black panther movie. Just you WAIT til the Michael Joseph Jackson feature presentation drop,” said another.
Over on X/Twitter, one user expressed: “the way my people are about to come to the movie theater dressed in every kind of michael jackson that has ever jacksoned for this movie.”
One user even went so far as to preemptively profess that the new Michael Jackson movie would the very thing the theater needs to get back on the good foot and be another cultural touchstone. (Hmmm, wasn’t that the same thing folks were saying about “Sinners” earlier this year and “Black Panther” back in 2018? Yeah, exactly.)
“This Michael biopic is about to revive the movie theater industry. Listen to what I tell you! They thought they’d seen records broken before… this man is about to shatter them from the grave, nearly 20 years after his passing,” another user said online.
Other users gave a warning to others expecting this to a calm and quiet moviegoing experience, making it abundantly clear that much like those previously mentioned films–the new “Michael” movie will be an experience whether you’re ready for it or not.
“Black folk about to cut up so bad, and extra like, come April 24 for the Michael Jackson movie. Please stay home if you want a quiet viewing experience because we about to be all up in the aisles!” one user said on Threads.
What’s more is that “Michael,” is going to be yet another pop culture moment that’s no doubt going to transcend racial lines and generational lines, much like Jackson did in real life. There has not been nor will there ever be another Michael Jackson. The impact he had on music, fashion, culture, film and more is one that you only witness once in this lifetime. With a icon as big as him, there’s no denying that this movie has the potential to be yet another box office success. And if “Sinners” and “Black Panther” are our barometers, then we truly haven’t even begun to scratch the surface.
