While folks continue to fight over which artist will be the next big thing, one soul singer is slowly becoming an undisputed champ in the music world. Yes, art is subjective, but one thing that isn’t up for debate is just how much singer I Am Roze (they/she) has the whole internet in a chokehold!

Roze was born in Louisiana and currently lives in England. When you look at them, the 24-year-old simply appears to be a sweet person with a warm smile. But while that is all true, their soulful voice continues to captivate the word.
They’ve amassed almost 1 million followers on TikTok and thousands more on Instagram. For Roze, music is more than just expression. It’s a chance to defy the odds and speak on issues that truly matter. “My music is like a diary entry — deeply personal, but it also connects with others who might be going through the same thing,” they told ColorsxStudios last year.
They’ve built a reputation of being unapologetically themself while encouraging others to do the same. “In this wonderful world we live in, times are definitely rough,” the singer told an audience during a performance. “It feels like there are a lot of people doing a lot of following and not a lot of people thinking for themselves,” they continued.
With songs like “Think for Yourself” off their new project “Social Commentary,” I Am Roze is challenging folks– especially Americans– to look within. The Louisiana native is also never afraid to call out the government and condemn injustice, which has brought its own set of issues for them.
“If you misconstrue me condemning governments and government officials for enacting violence against many for the actions of a few, you’re being willingly obtuse,” they said on Instagram. It’s this outspokenness about the plight of queer and Black people that ultimately led them to pack up everything and move out the country.
“I knew things were gonna be far from great and that I needed to go cause I can’t help you if I’m also trapped,” they told Rolling Stone about their move. “The world doesn’t exist for the anxiety I feel for my trans family and for my Black family and all my people of color.” Now, Roze said they love England and the opportunities the country has presented.
In fact, Roze celebrated their first ever sold out show in London back in November. But the road to success hasn’t been easy– especially as a queer Black person from the Deep South.
Roze was even briefly homeless after Hurricane Laura hit in 2020. They told Rolling Stone despite the unfortunate circumstance, this is what launched their career. “I dropped out of university when the hurricane hit and I needed to figure out what to do with my life,” they said. This prompted them to begin posting and streaming on TikTok. “That was great because it allowed me to think for the first time that people did want to listen to my music.”
This is only the beginning for the talented singer. Clearly, Roze knows exactly who they are. You can stream their latest EP, “Social Commentary,” on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube.
