How Trump is Now Involved in R. Kelly’s Legal Mess, Explained

The once beloved R&B singer is pulling out all the stops to try to get out of prison and his latest attempt just might involve the president!

Another day, another attempt by R. Kelly and his legal team to try to get him out of jail. This time, however, President Donald Trump just might be getting roped into it. We'll explain.

Video will return here when scrolled back into view

As we previously told you, Kelly's team filed an emergency motion to get him out of federal prison after alleging that he was the target of a murder plot by a neo-Nazi. His lawyers asked for him to be put in home detention instead and held a press conference blasting the alleged plot and corruption by Bureau of Prison officials.

Now, it seems like the "Same Girl" singer is stepping up his maneuvers and attempting to get the president of the United States involved according to a new statement from his lawyer Beau Brindley. Speaking to PEOPLE on Thursday (June 12), Brindley said that they're actively trying to get clemency and a presidential pardon from Trump in order to get the justice they feel the disgraced singer deserves

"We are in open discussions with people close to President Trump. And those discussions have expanded and intensified since we filed our motion," Brindley explained. "We believe that President Trump is the only person with the courage to help us."

What's more is that Brindley also alleged that since they filed the emergency motion, Kelly's essentially been "punished" as he's now in solitary confinement. He went on to describe the morbid conditions the "Step in the Name of Love" singer has endured while inside.

"Immediately after our motion became public, Robert was thrown into solitary confinement. He cannot make phone calls to his family. He has no access to commissary. He has spiders crawling over him while he tries to sleep," Brindley explained.

He also said that Kelly was afraid to eat the prison food out of fear that it may be poisoned. Trump has yet to respond or make any official statements about pardoning the "Ignition" singer, but if and when he does, we'll be sure to let you know. Given his track record for pardoning questionable Black rappers and other icons, this move could be more of a reality than we think.
