They say the first hundred days of a presidency are about building legacy and enacting tangible, positive change folks can feel — not hyper-fixating on settling the score by the nation’s Commander in Chief. But it seems President Donald Trump’s mission has shifted from governing to good ol’ “get-back,” leaving Black America to wonder when official policy became just another word for retribution.

The Trump presidency arrived as a shock to many Black Americans, and to be honest, the aftershock never quite stopped. At one time, it felt impossible for things to get worse than 2020, yet this administration has unleashed a more volatile national climate that has left a lasting impact on the Black community, violence and unrest included.

Biggest Takeaways from Trump’s Grumpy Christmas Address to Americans

WASHINGTON, DC – DECEMBER 17: U.S. President Donald Trump addresses the nation from the Diplomatic Room of the White House on December 17, 2025 in Washington, DC. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump would be “addressing the country about all of his historic accomplishments over the past year, and maybe teasing some policy that will be coming in the new year, as well.” (Photo by Doug Mills – Pool/Getty Images)

With only days until it’s officially Christmas, President Donald Trump handed out one final present to the American people: a 20-minute-long address blaming Democrats and toting his “impeccable” record so far in his second term. The president stood in front of a cozy fireplace and tree garlands inside the White House during the Wednesday (Dec. 17) speech as he boasted about the “progress” he’s been making for the country.

How Trump’s Department of Education Is Letting Down Black Students — Out Loud

379693 04:Students wear t-shirts that read inspirational messages during class at “Knowledge is Power Program” (KIPP) Academy October 4, 2000 in The Bronx, New York. Inspirational messages are worn and also posted all over the classrooms and hallways to serve as a reminder of their continual success. The Knowledge Is Power Program educates 200 middle-school students, mostly poor black and Latino neighborhood children, housed in a hallway on the fourth floor of a regular Bronx public schooI. Because of strict discipline where each student gets two hours of homework a night and a regular school day runs nine-and-a-half-hours, including Saturdays and throughout the summer, test scores are the highest in the Bronx. Governor George Bush of Texas, where another KIPP school is run, singled out KIPP for praise during his presidential debate against Vice President Al Gore. (Photo by Chris Hondros/Newsmakers)

Students of color are disproportionately bullied at school. That’s why the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights was tasked with investigating and bringing justice and peace to Black students across the country. But while the office has investigated nearly dozens of civil rights cases over the last three years– according to ProPublica— under President Donald Trump, this number looks a lot different.

It’s been over a year since Atlanta District Attorney Fani Willis’ racketeering case against President Donald Trump completely fell apart. Now, Willis is being formally investigated over her allegedly mishandling of the historic trial, but she’s clearly not going down without a fight.

Young folks’ response to the slow-motion crawl of American politics has been to step up to the table and make their own plate. In 2025, Gen Z and Millennial leaders have been exploding onto the political scene, and given President Donald Trump’s second term, there’s been a demand for more fresh faces and new ideas in formal government.
