Gotham Awards 2023: Teyana Taylor, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Dominique Fishback Among Nominees

Whether you can believe it or not, nominee announcements for the 2023 Gotham Awards kicks off the unofficial official start of awards season here in Hollywood. And while things may look a bit different than normal ( #HotStrikeSummerandFall), other things are moving on with business as usual.

And because we root for everybody Black ‘round this way, let’s get into the Blackity-black nominees for this year.

For her role in the upcoming Ava DuVernay film, Origin, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor is nominated for Outstanding Lead Performance.

Outstanding Lead Performance: Jeffrey Wright

For his role in the upcoming film, American Fiction, Jeffrey Wright is also nominated for Outstanding Lead Performance alongside Teyana and Aunjanue, making this a category to watch.

Outstanding Supporting Performance: Jamie Foxx

For his role in the Juel Taylor-directed, Netflix film They Cloned Tyrone, Jamie Foxx is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Performance.

Outstanding Supporting Performance: Da’Vine Joy Randolph

For her role in The Holdovers, Da’Vine Joy Randolph is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Performance.

Breakthrough Series: I’m a Virgo

I’m a Virgo, directed by Boots Riley and starring Jharrel Jerome, Olivia Washington, Kara Young, Brett Gray and Allius Barnes, is nominated for Breakthrough Series.

Breakthrough Series: Swarm

Swarm, the Donald Glover-created, Prime video series starring Dominique Fishback, Chloe Bailey and Damson Idris, is also nominated for Breakthrough Series.

Outstanding Performance in a New Series: Dominique Fishback

For her role as the lead performer in the Donald Glover-created, Prime Video series, Swarm, Dominique Fishback is nominated for Outstanding Performance in a New Series.

Outstanding Performance in a New Series: Jharrel Jerome

For his performance as lead actor in the Boots Riley-created and directed Prime Video series, I’m a Virgo, Jharrel Jerome is nominated for Outstanding Performance in a New Series.

Best Feature: A Thousand and One

A Thousand and One, directed by A.V. Rockwell and starring Teyana Taylor, Will Catlett, Josiah Cross, Aven Courtney, and Aaron Kingsley Adetola, is nominated for Best Feature.

Breakthrough Director Award: A.V. Rockwell

For her directorial debut, A Thousand and One, A.V. Rockwell is nominated for the Breakthrough Director Award.

Breakthrough Director Award: Raven Jackson

For her feature directorial debut, All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt, Raven Jackson is nominated for Breakthrough Director.

Gotham Cultural Icon & Creator Tribute for Social Justice: RUSTIN

The Gotham Cultural Icon and Creator Tribute for Social award will honor Rustin, the film, Bayard Rustin, the activist and organizer of the 1968 March on Washington, and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, while celebrating director George C. Wolfe’s spectacular achievement in bringing Rustin’s story to life.

Gotham Visionary Icon & Creator Tribute: AIR

The Gotham Visionary Icon and Creator Tribute Award will honor the film Air, as well as the visionaries behind the iconic Michael Jordan partnership.
