The drum-and-bass-heavy go-go genre, which emerged out of the nation’s capital in the 1970s, has since helped define a generation of black Washingtonians, as well as black culture in D.C. Hopkinson travels through time, building a page-turning narrative extending from go-go’s beginnings among D.C.’s riot-torn neighborhoods to its heyday in the 1980s.
More than a writer’s homage to one of Washington’s most recognized and appreciated cultural exports, Go-Go Live examines race’s pivotal role in the development not only of the genre but also of a contemporary cultural environment in the nation’s capital.
Hopkinson will be on hand to discuss the impact of go-go on Washington’s black culture psyche, as well as the genre’s continued role in a city whose racial demographics are swiftly changing.
