Thereβs been a lot of talk about how the new crop of popular women rappersβSexyy Red; Ice Spice; GloRilla; and Megan Thee Stallionβare all too sexual. We see comments on the internet about how they show too much skin, talk about sex too much in their music and are setting a bad example for young women. There are also debates about whether their record labels are forcing them to act this way to boost sales. Well, one of these women has a very clear message to everyone discussing her sexuality.
On Thursday, GloRilla posted a video on social media explaining that she makes her own decisions and her record label has nothing to do with it.

Well she certainly didnβt mince words. Itβs understandable that the open way these women express themselves is not going to be for everyone. And itβs definitely not for fans of all ages. However, policing their bodies and acting like they donβt have agency in how theyβre presented is insulting. Do labels, agents and producers offer input? Of course they do. But do these seem like the kind of women who are incapable of standing up for themselves?

Since the moment hip-hop became a thing, male rappers have been walking around with their shirts off and making songs about how many women want to sleep with them. But the minute female MCs start showing confidence in their sexuality, we have endless discussions about whatβs appropriate and acceptable? I donβt remember anyone ever claiming that the label was making LL Cool J, Jay-Z or Drake talk about their love lives.
If youβre uncomfortable with these women being so open with their bodies and sexuality, thereβs a very easy fix: donβt listen to or watch them. Itβs really that simple. They donβt need to change everything about themselves just because some people are uncomfortable.
