Can you believe it has been 25 years since the premiere of the hit UPN series, “Girlfriends?” On Sept. 11, 2000, we were introduced to our favorite television girlfriends crew — Joan, Maya, Toni, Lynn and the “honorary girlfriend” William — who kept us laughing with their relatable moments as they navigate friendship, love, and careers in ways that were never done before, thanks to the creative genius of Mara Brock Akil.

Persia White – Lynn Searcy
Lynn Searcy, played by Persia White, was the free-spirited, bohemian, eccentric bestie that everyone needed. Beyond her quirky ways, her constant desire to pursue multiple college degrees prevented her from establishing a clear career path.
Where Is She Now?

Persia White is keeping busy with her music and activism. In 2023, she released her album, “Love Letters,” and continues to pursue a career in music, directing projects, and developing her own production company. Outside of entertainment, she’s active in animal rights and environmental causes. She’s married to actor Joseph Morgan and is raising her daughter Mecca.
Golden Brooks – Maya Wilkes
“Girlfriends” introduced Maya Wilkes, played by Golden Brooks, as Joan’s outspoken and sassy assistant, who juggles being a wife, a mother and later a published author.
Where Is She Now?

Golden Brooks remains active in TV and film. In 2024, she appeared on “Power Book II: Ghost,” and she often reflects on her career and the changing landscape of television and social media. Off-screen, she keeps her family life private, raising a daughter with her former partner, actor D.B. Woodside.
Reggie Hayes – William Dent
Joan’s co-worker and “honorary girlfriend” William Dent was a loyal yet awkwardly funny confidant. While navigating the women’s dramatic moments, Dent also faced his own ups and downs with love and relationships.
Where Is He Now?

Reggie Hayes faced some personal challenges but remained committed to acting. After struggling with congestive heart failure and financial difficulties, he made a significant comeback. In 2025, he lost 60 pounds and documented his journey on social media. He landed the lead role in a indie film, “I Hate My Love Life,” which premiered at the Seattle Black Film Festival. He also has a recurring role as Superintendent Collins on the hit ABC show “Abbott Elementary.”
Jill Marie Jones – Antoinette Marie “Toni” Childs
Whenever you talk about a diva, you have to mention Toni Childs. The fabulously glamorous and often materalistic real estate agent, played by Jill Marie Jones, was a key character to the show. As Joan’s best friend, she kept viewers entertained with her unapologetic and often selfish personality, but her humor and her charm definitely made up for it. Among our favorite moments is the constant mispronouciation of Maya’s son name, Jabari.
Where Is She Now?

Since early 2025, Jill Marie Jones has been active in theater. Currently, she is starring in Je’Caryous Johnson’s stage play, “Games Women Play,” which has been touring multiple cities. Jones keeps her fans updated with her personal and professional life through social media.
Tracee Ellis Ross – Joan Clayton
Finally, we have to acknowledge the heart of the beloved friend group, Joan Clayton. The ambitious and successful attorney often played the “responsible friend,” balancing her nurturing and dramatic sides while navigating her quest for a lifelong partner.
Where Is She Now?

After “Girlfriends” ended, Tracee Ellis Ross took on roles in series like “Reed Between The Lines,” and guest spots on “CSI,” and “Private Practice.” And who can forget her starring as Dr. Rainbow Johnson on ABC’s sitcom “Black-ish,” earning her an multiple NAACP Image Awards, a Golden Globe, and Emmy nominations. Currently, Ross is focused on her new travel docuseries, “Solo Traveling with Tracee Ellis Ross.”
Mara Brock Akil

Mara Brock Akil, the creator of “Girlfriends,” became the youngest African American showrunner on the UPN/CW network. She made her mark by telling authentic stories about Black women, highlighting their friendships, careers, romantics struggles, and personal growth.
Where Is She Now?

Since the show ended, Mara Brock Akil has built a successful career as a television writer, producer, and showrunner. She created hit shows such as CW’s “The Game,” BET’s first drama series, “Being Mary Jane,” and OWN’s romantic drama, “Love Is.” She continues to develop and produce new content for audiences to enjoy.
