After weeks of letting the the courts and the lawyers speak for him, France’s President Emmanuel Macron is putting his grievances against conservative commentator Candace Owens on blast for the first time ever.
The legal battle between Owens and Macron is personal. And according to the president, he’s not going down without a fight.
“It is a matter of upholding the truth. It’s about defending my honor. Because this is nonsense,” Macron said to Paris Match. As we previously reported, Macron and his wife, First Lady Brigitte Macron, are suing Owens for defamation after the podcaster repeatedly claimed the first lady is transgender. The French official has even hired a private investigator to get to the bottom of Owens’ ongoing controversies.
“It has reached such a scale in the United States that we had no choice but to respond,” Macron said of the debunked conspiracy. “It is a matter of upholding the truth. We are talking about the civil status of the first lady of France, a wife, a mother, a grandmother. “
Despite the Macrons’ clears seriousness, Owens continues to dismiss the lawsuit against her, calling it an overreaction. On the other hand, this 22-count suit was filed back in July, and now, we know just how serious the Macrons are taking the matter.
The couple reportedly hired private investigators to document Owen’s ties to far-right politicians in France, Russia and the U.S., according to the Financial Times. Dan Nardello, executive chair of Nardello & Co — the PI company — said, “The Macrons have brought this lawsuit with the full knowledge of who Owens is aligned with.”
As part of their ongoing case, the Macrons also wanted to understand why Owens had baselessly targeted the first lady. Owens shared an eight-part series falsely claiming Macron’s wife was born male and had stolen another person’s identity before transitioning into a woman.
According to the investigator’s findings, this conspiracy theory was started by a Spanish blogger in 2017. From there, the rumor spread to France and was even championed by Xavier Poussard, the author of “Becoming Brigitte.” It was Poussard who then translated his debunked findings to English and shared them with Owens.
“I think she [Owens] knew nothing about Brigitte Macron only a month before, and suddenly she takes on the case, and says she is putting her career on the line,” Poussard said according to the Financial Times. He even added this conspiracy was “a real boost from the Trump entourage.”
The podcaster was repeatedly warned to chill out on the theories about First Lady Brigitte. Owens even claimed President Donald Trump gave her a call, telling her those attacks were allegedly ruining diplomatic dealings between the two countries, we reported. That was months before the Macrons took legal action.
Now, things are heating up for Owens big time.
To the 36-year-old’s credit, Owens is no stranger to controversy. She has been banned from countries, targeted by some of the most powerful names in the political and entertainment world and fired from The Daily Wire over her offensive views. Now with her reputation back on the line, Owens’ legal battle with these French officials could prove more detrimental than ever.
