After a Mess of Scandals, Fourth Pastor Resigns From Texas Megachurch

A slew of scandals has swept this North Texas church since its founding pastor resigned in June.

Churches go through changes, but in the case of the Gateway Megachurch in Texas, there’s clearly something else in the holy water. On Aug. 21, the church unexpectedly announced Executive Pastor Kemtal Glasgow is β€œno longer employed,” sparking questions about exactly went led to his resignation.

β€œIt recently came to light that Kemtal Glasgow had a moral failure so we’ve asked him to step down as a pastor at Gateway and devote time to his marriage and family,” the megachurch said. β€œAlthough his employment is ending, we are devoted to still caring for Kemtal and his family.”

Glasgow’s exit marks the church’s fourth pastoral departure since June 2024. In a statement to CBS News Texas, Gateway said that β€œit’s our deepest desire for every staff member to lead a life of integrity, both in their personal and professional lives.”

The church added, β€œthis decision regarding Kemtal had nothing to with the departure of Robert Morris nor related to those circumstances.” Gateway’s founder and former senior pastor Robert Morris resigned from his position in June, starting a snowball of resignations to follow.

Four days before he resigned, Cindy Clemishire went public with sexual abuse allegations against Morris dating back to when she was just 12 and he was 21, according to USA Today.

Clemishire alleged Morris began sexually abusing her in 1982 and continued throughout 1987. The now 54-year-old woman first went public with the Wartburg Watch, a blog about sexual abuse happening across churches.

In response to Clemishire’s claims, Morris said in a statement to WFAA-TV, β€œIt was kissing and petting and not intercourse, but it was wrong.” The now-62-year-old continued, β€œSince that time, I have walked in purity and accountability in this area.”

The following month in July, Morris’ son, James, and his wife, Bridgette, also resigned from their pastoral duties at Gateway. According to WFAA-TV, James’ departure came just a year before he was expected to take over for his father.

Now, Gateway is on the hunt for yet another pastor after the church announced Glasgow’s resignation. The megachurch nor Glasgow has explained what the β€œmoral failure” was which led to Glasgow stepping down from his position.
